It takes focused investment and attention from developed nations to nurture the free markets and democratic reforms. That shit doesn't just sprout where it's planted. The Balkans are actually doing pretty well. Africa is a victim of "sprinkle some democracy over there" approaches to foreign assistance.

So long as the government is representative and provides a voice for all factions, democracy will work. The economy must also flourish, so that the government can provide necessary services for the people, as well. The two go hand in hand.

Let's just hope so. I always figured that the most important prerequisite to a functional democracy was an educated populace. In Iraq that is less of an issue than in Afghanistan... that's a country full of goat herders. If the people aren't critical of their government corruption will spread easily, just look at Karzai.

In Iraq's case I can see it going in the direction of Belgium if one population gets fed up having to work with the other.

An educated, prosperous middle class is also very important to a successful democracy...but you must have the economy to support that.

Whilst true, you need educated people to be your doctors, engineers, lawyers etc. which are kind of important in an indirect way.
