also you dont need to have a complete degree.  I just graduated with a butterbar who has had his commission for the last 2 and a half years because he went to some military junior college in missouri before he tranfsered to a 4 year university.

Doesn't OCS require you to have a college degree as well? Also, ROTC is reserve training you can opt in for while you're in college right?

If the service academies offer bachelor programs that educate you specifically in military matters then that would be like the academies we've got around here. You can get in those directly from highschool.

Yeah OCS requires a degree. ROTC is training during college. Service academies all give a B.S. if I'm not mistaken. A lot of focus on engineering.

So you can study anything you want while you're in ROTC and be an officer once you're done?

Sort of. I have a friend who's a criminal justice major. He's doing pretty well, and he was in AFRTOC, but they didn't accept him for the final part of ROTC (which is when you contract with the Air Force) because his GPA wasn't high enough. A ton of people are doing ROTC / joining the military in general these days because of the shitty economy. The Air Force mainly wants engineers right now. If you're not an engineering/science major then you have to have a very very high GPA to get in. He might still do OTS after graduating, I think they're a bit more lenient.

yes. But they arent big enough to cover the needs of the military.

I'm a Poli Sci major and all the regional admissions director for the southeast said was that I wasn't going to be getting a scholarship my first year (sophomore year cuz my last school didn't have ROTC). Which is fine.

According to my friend who did ROTC at American (commuted to Howard) if you don't get on scholarship at all you can get the GI bill? Which is pretty sick.

He has to sign a six year contract or pay back every penny.

still.  gi bill is something that should be earned through service, not as an incentive.

So what happens if you get the GI bill and serve more than those 6 years? It starts saving up again?

Same with re-enlisting?

Why don't they just select candidates and train them for this post within the military instead of making it a requirement to have a random college degree? I don't see how one adds anything of value to your function as an officer. Wasted years that could be replaced by a school within the military to learn something actually valuable + you get younger officers.

That's how it's done over here anyway, in the UK too I believe. You get a degree while you're in officer school.
You need 2 A levels at the very least but you won't be considered in the current climate with anything less than a degree.
