Wonder what will happen if 2 known and well established straight guys decide to apply for a marriage license and make no bones about being straight, and getting married for financial benefit. We will see, but I am betting it would be challenged because they are not gay.

Ya know, this bullshit about the sanctity of marriage is just that bullshit. People have open marriages which is hardly a traditional monogamous marriage. There is no reason to think 2 straight women or 2 straight men would get married if there was a profit to be made from it.
And so you feel discriminated against if they were prevented from being married because they are clearly not gay? And yet when someone suggests you try it yourself you ask it not to become personal?

And yet if they did this for tax breaks, you would no doubt be complaining.

Man, the hypocrisy is mind boggling.
lol, I said do not make it personal because this is not about me. I will not feel discriminated against, but you better bet your ass someone will challenge it in court. I mean c'mon we got people going to court over "in god we trust", do you think a perceived discrimination will go un-noticed and un challenged?

Not sure what the second part is about, I am all for tax breaks however you can get them, therefore no hypocrisy. The more a person can keep their money the better.
Gay marriage = same-sex marriage. It is increasing your rights as a citizen, not discriminating heterosexuals.

I can't honestly understand how anyone can not understand the simple logic this involves, and yet here we are.

Thought you left D&ST, no surprise you came back though. Anyway, I personally prefer to marry someone I love and is overall a person I can deal with for the rest of my life.

How are they to prove they are gay/straight?
And if they can't get married because they are straight, does it really matter?
Don't you think that would be a bit like ridiculing homosexal people that do want to genuinely marry their partners?

You know, I don't honestly think i've ever heard of anyone I know getting married for the tax breaks. Maybe it's different in america to here but normally you have to spend a bit of time booking these things and if you want to get married in a church tend to spend time talking to whoever's performing the ceremony who will not marry you if he/she is not happy with the arrangement. Same goes for the registry office. You can't just walk into wherever and say we want to get married right this second so we can get a two for one offer at pizza hut.

This thread is pointless and just another excuse to cry on about how because you're a white working class male every single law is there to give minorities power over you. Get on with your life and stop moaning about how tiny insignificant laws that don't affect you are discriminating.

Maybe if you stopped to consider the amount of shit that people of a different sexual preference to the norm go through on an everyday basis you would be more in favour of giving them the same rights in the eyes of the law. That is the point of these gay pride parades that you seem to hate so much, they are in your face for a fucking reason, they're not meant to be ignored they're a protest as much as a celebration.

Try some fucking empathy for once.

Marriage is less and less about love and more and more about paper-work these days.

I'm not saying a lot of people get married without being in love, but a lot of loving couples get married just to sign the paper-work and be a "couple" in the government's eyes. It's silly, really, that marriage is needed for that.

I'm pretty sure if you stop that system, a lot more couples will live with each other for the rest of their lives without getting married.

I don't see why married couples get tax benefits but two people who love each other and have lived with each other and have essentially been married in all but name for 20 years don't.

it's stupid

Because the government doesn't have any other way of logging you as a couple. Stupid indeed.

I also don't understand why single people don't get some of these benefits. The only argument I've heard is something to the effect of "well y'know the government wants to make sure marriages stay together," guess you better up those tax benefits or something because the 50% divorce rate we have right now seems pretty awful.

Lets see if it is a question when applying.

Yes it would matter because then there is no question as to wether or not laws were passed that catered to a specific group.

I am all for same sex marriages, regardless of gay or straight. It should not matter in the eyes of the govt. If it does then there is a problem. As it is, NO ONE can marry same sex partners. If the laws changes then it needs to change to where ANYONE can marry same sex partners.

Lets face it, marriage = partnership and there are plenty of partnerships out there that have little to do with love.

Hmmm, so you have never ever heard of people getting married for any other reason than love huh? You need to get out more.

So you do not think discriminating laws are worth crying about either?

Then maybe they should stop painting themselves gold and putting angel wings and parading through the streets if they do not want to be ridiculed.

Never said I do not want all groups to have the same rights, I have clearly stated my position, I do not want any groups have special rights or considerations over any other groups.

...and that 50% divorce rate only shows what an irrelevant institution marriage really is.

The main benefit of marriage, afaik, is that you get your spouses pension when they die. Also, if there is a big gap in income and wealth between the two, the high-earner will often pay less taxes because it is assumed that you have to pay for your spouse/kids as well. Same thing applies to single parents.

Can't really do that for single people..

i didn't read anywhere in that bill that stipulated there can only be marriage between same sexes if the people are homosexual.

what stops people from lying and pretending to be homosexual to get married?

what stops heterosexual people from getting married to the opposite sex for financial gain?

What the fuck is this thread about again?

Who knows. It is retarded. Why not have a thread asking if a gay person can marry someone of the opposite sex?

lowing, you don't need to be gay to marry another dude. They won't ask you "Are you really a turd-pusher, because you can only marry another man if you are." They won't ask that. If two straight men want to get married for whatever bizarre reason, they can.
