you mean federal tax? cause i dont know how you could not pay state and local through sales tax...
A good portion of US income tax revenue comes from wealthier people. I think if you're married with two kids you can make up to like $50,000 and end up having very little tax burden because of all the tax breaks, credits and deductions. It's pretty redonkulous yo
Hey, lucky for me that I'm only in the 25% tax bracket instead of the 28% that my fiancee is in. That's just federal taxes too...

I cbf reading the whole thread but we have had the images on packets in Australia for quite a few years now (maybe 6? More?).

I dunno I smoked for 10 years, quit coming up to three years ago now (late September) and tbh I think the images were a contributing factor. Not a big one but over time as I got desensitised them I also thought in the back of my mind I didn't want to end up like that.

But really, what got me to quit was the fact that over time it just made less and less sense to smoke. The more I thought about the logic behind it, the more ridiculous it seemed I was paying all this money to stick burning bits of paper in my mouth to cause health problems.

Now there is a legislation being introduced into the Federal Government to have all cigarette packaging to be plain brown, with no logos or branding at all. I dunno if it will work or not. It seems every couple years all they do is up the taxes on them more. I remember when I start and smokes were $4-$6 a packet. Now they're $16+

smoking (or more specifically, nicotine) DOES lower stress levels in smokers or at least takes the edge off. one also has to wonder whether or not something should be banned simply because of whether it has any "benefits." alcohol doesn't have any benefits, at least not clear-cut definite ones (AFAIK the thing about red wine is still a "may" just like cigarettes).

Does it smell bad? Yes. Is it probably going to kill me in the end? Yes. Do I wish I'd never started? Yes. None of that changes the fact that the habit is so entrenched in my personality that giving it up is like ripping out a piece of me.
This is exactly my point - So many (most?) smokers wish they'd never started, and a lot of them cannot quit. We do not want the same thing to happen to our younger generation, who don't have the same ability to judge the consequences of smoking like you do. It's sadly going to have a negative effect on your wallet, but I think it's worth it if it helps make cigarettes a thing of the past. But obviously, I'm not paying any of this, so there you go.

The taxes seem to have worked really well - how often do you hear people use the, "why the fuck would you, it's so expensive" argument? It already popped up in page one of this thread, and I here people my age say it all the time. And now I don't know a single person (my age) who smokes. I'm quite happy about that.

smoking, via addiction/withdrawal, creates more stress than it fixes.

We've had that sort of thing here for years now.  You get the odd smoker who says "eww thats gross I dont wanna look at that when im having a fag", but they go ahead and smoke anyway.  Most smokers ignore the warnings, and it even provides some of them with a perverse thing to collect or converse about while they're fagging up.

What does work (somewhat) is raising the price of tobacco.

that was more of a retort to marine's claim that soda has benefits since it hydrates you. cigarettes do too, apparently, but obviously the negatives outweight any benefits.
