typing is just so mechanical, it's actually very detached from the words and meanings that you're forming with the actions of your fingers on the keys; with writing, there's something about the formation of letters and words by the brain/hand that, i think (all speculation of course...) interacts at a deeper level of intellect.

I'm split equally between visual and kinesthetic, I can do most things if I put my mind to it but much prefer working with my hands.

profs ban laptops because a) they're fucking noisy, b) it's not much fun lecturing to the back of a laptop, c) the internet/computers are a huge distraction, whereas a pen and paper aren't (doodles notwithstanding). i'd be pissed too if i'd trained for 8 years to reach a lectureship position and then had to spend my days talking to a bunch of 18 year old morons engrossed in farmville and checking their facebook picture comments.

and i type about 4x faster than i write... that doesn't mean anything. when i write notes, they're absorbed better. touch typing is a mechanical action - thoughtless, easy, detached - whereas writing and formulating sentences with a pen somehow involves a little more engagement and cognition. don't quote me on the science behind that but i think newbie is onto something with his mnemonics-of-writing. there's a reason why people for years and years have recommended copying/re-writing notes as a primary revision technique.
There's something about the way the brain processes reading and writing, compared with typing.
Re-writing notes was the only revision process which worked for me.
true but these students are at uni.
If they don't want to do anything its their loss.
My uni teachers don't mind having laptops in classes, as long as you follow and fucking get what they are saying.

I'm definitely a visual learner more than anything else. I always had a hard time paying attention to what my professors said in class. Meant extra time doing homework but c'est la vie.

From here

Visual Learners

    take numerous detailed notes
tend to sit in the front
    are usually neat and clean
often close their eyes to visualize or remember something
find something to watch if they are bored
like to see what they are learning
benefit from illustrations and presentations that use color
are attracted to written or spoken language rich in imagery
prefer stimuli to be isolated from auditory and kinesthetic distraction
    find passive surroundings ideal

If you scored mostly b's, you may have an auditory learning style. You learn by hearing and listening.
Auditory Learners

sit where they can hear but needn't pay attention to what is happening in front
may not coordinate colors or clothes, but can explain why they are wearing what they are wearing and why
hum or talk to themselves or others when bored
    acquire knowledge by reading aloud
remember by verbalizing lessons to themselves (if they don't they have difficulty reading maps or diagrams or handling conceptual assignments like mathematics).

If you had mostly c's, you may have a kinesthetic learning style. You learn by touching and doing.
Kinesthetic Learners

need to be active and take frequent breaks
speak with their hands and with gestures
remember what was done, but have difficulty recalling what was said or seen
find reasons to tinker or move when bored
rely on what they can directly experience or perform
activities such as cooking, construction, engineering and art help them perceive and learn
enjoy field trips and tasks that involve manipulating materials
sit near the door or someplace else where they can easily get up and move around
are uncomfortable in classrooms where they lack opportunities for hands-on experience
communicate by touching and appreciate physically expressed encouragement, such as a pat on the back

Visual learner describes me to an absolute T.

I am definitely a visual learner. I need graphs/illustrations or at least some sort of imagery to learn stuff. And I enjoy it too, so I guess that's good. And probably not a coincidence.

Hey guys,

I've been accepted into University so I went out and bought myself a Thinkpad T520 (Arrives in 2 weeks).
It's got a 9 cell battery, and I might buy the additional 9 cell wedge which extends life to nearly 24 hours of continuous use.

I'm going into computer engineering,

What sort of stuff should I expect to use this thing for, and how often?

I'm putting either OneNote or Evernote on it for sure, and I'm guessing it'll be used for lecture notes. For anyone that's been through school recently (or currently enrolled), any tips on use/general comments about how useful it is vs pen and paper or whatnot?

Thanks.

I did a test in 1st year of high school, showed I was Kinesthetic. Let's see if that's changed.

No I think they've actually done studies that show a pretty solid link between actually writing the words and remembering them.

i'm sure they have. language is an infinitely intriguing subject - linguistically as a scientific construct and conceptually as a philosophical mode of inquiry. i love it.

for it to never get used productively
for it to get smashed at some point
for it to be left on a bus
for it to die when you really really need this assignment printing off

etc

pen/paper all the way, then maybe summarise key points per lecture onto your PC

And I got first pick for nearly everything, too. The only course I didn't get into was the CSC111 on Monday. I almost signed up for the 3:30 slot but it was waitlisted so I went for the next one down. So in a way I actually got lucky because otherwise I would have been in classes for like 8 solid hours.

I had some days like that, was terrible. Just couldn't be bothered going.

Also none of those learning styles sound like anything I do.

Yeah, but it's a course I have to take to get in to the business school and I definitely need to get an A in it, so there's my motivation for going.

My Tuesdays and Thursdays won't be as nice sadly. Starts at 11AM, goes until 3PMish with only 15 minute breaks between the three classes. And they're all on different parts of campus so I'll be getting some cardio in. And on Tuesday I have a 2.5 hour-long lecture from 4 to 6:30, although the teacher apparently rarely goes the whole length, lets us take stretch breaks, and lets us get dinner on those days where does go the whole block.

Fridays are 10AM (boo) but I finish by 2:15.

e: mandatory "fuck yeah business students"
