New update.

Got another Sapphire 512MB X1900XTX.

This time I installed the current 6.5 Catalyst beta drivers, this seems to have fixed the flickering. I should have thought of this before.

When you started this thread, I started having problems with my 7900 GTX (2 in SLI). For me it become unbearable. The # of times the card would crash + the amount of on-screen distortions in shader/mesh/3-d elements were massive.

Instead of changing the cards or installing a internal liquid-cooling system I bought a nearly silent external fan for about $25 - and pointed it the hole in the back of comp. box. When I checked the GPU temp - it dropped 25 to 30 (F) degress. No more problems & no more crashes. Sure, it's low-tech - but it worked for me.

Hmm.

Perhaps the 7900GTX series suffers from cooling problems?

Every cpu and gpu all seem to have different tolerances to heat, unfortunately I can't remember what temps the 7900's were running at.

That doesn't explain one of the problems though, I had the window wide open near the pc, it was around 15C in the room and still I got artifacting with the 7900. Looking up on the net it isn't hard to find tales of problems with the 7900. Like I said in earlier posts the ATI cards all suffered from an annoying flicker that isn't present in the 6.2 or 6.5 beta catalyst drivers.

But, everything seems ok now.

For the moment...
