New PC struggles with BF2

I just bought a new PC and one of the main reasons was to run BF2 in all its maxed out glory. However things have not been smooth and BF2, both in single and multiplayer stutters a lot, the framerate is choppy and it occassionally freezes for a few seconds. Here are the specs:

AMD X2 3800+ Dual Core
7900 Gt 256MB
1gb PC3200 RAM
Asus A8N-SLI Mboard
300GB Maxtor HD
Windows XP Home

And I'm running at at 1280x1024 with everything on high but with antialiasing off and dynamic lights and shadows on medium.

It has the new patch and every driver is up to date (Nforce, forceware etc) and with it being a new computer there is not much crap on there. Furthermore it runs everything else fine (Oblivion is beautiful maxed out) which makes me think it isnt a hardware problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You cannot run high textures with only a gig of RAM. You'll need 1.5 or 2 gigs to do that. BF2 when running high textures uses around 800MB of RAM and so if you combine that with your OS and background applications...

Run medium textures and the lag will most likely go away as the current lag is most likely your PC using virtual memory.

Or you could keep the settings on high, but... .(dont e-punch me for this one ).. you could try 1024x768?

You hate me now, don't you.. I bet it's the last advice you need after investing a small fortune on your rig?

Resolution makes little difference these days. Hell, I run 1600x1200 and max settings (except for the dynamic crap and AA) on my 6800 GT OC and pull off 60-80 FPS.

Well I'm not annoyed at all, I was always planning on getting another gig of Ram in the near future

Except its a 3800+ processor, a 7900 GT 256MB, a 19 inch widescreen, An X-Fi with Creative 5.1 speakers, and a different case. And it cost me a fair bit less.

That memory is 2x512MB. Remove it and put in a pair of 1GB sticks. The investment will only set you back by $150 to $200 USD, if you grab some Corsairs or OCZ's from a reasonable online retailer similar to newegg. If you put in another couple of 512MB modules, you'll void dual channel operation.

A few things spring to mind since I have a dual core processor too.

* Get the MS dual core fix.
* Install the AMD processor driver. (this fixed kotor for me when I had vsync disabled)
* Get 2GB, seriously you got a decent machine but only got 1GB. Bad idea.
* Also unrelated to your problem, if you get dropouts get the punkbuster update http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php. This seems to fix a few things with us dual core players.

I've got all settings on high except textures, which is on medium and 8sAA. This is with a 6800GS, 3500 and 1gb ram. I never have any lag and the game runs a gem.

changing the textures to high gives me unplayable lag constantly.

But I notice no difference between medium and high textures.

Yea get 2 gigs like everyone is saying. I ran settings high on my old comp with 1 gig of ram and it gave me probably 10-20 secs of lag at the start of the round. Sometimes even longer

The medium ones are much lower resolution. I recently switched to medium textures (from high) to improve my load times and everything looks so crappy now. I especially notice it while driving around a tank and looking at the front of the tank while driving it. It's all pixelated now.

To put it shortly, are you running at 1T or 2T with your 4x512MB? I'd be highly suprised if you are running at 1T without consistant crashing.

Apology on the original misreference, though, mixing [dual channel] with [command rate]. I've been consistantly exhausted since last week.

If you have to, 4x512MB will do, but the prospect of picking up a replacement pair is alot more juicy, considering you can sell a pair of decent 512MB's and have $50-$80 to help fund acquirement of 2x1GB.

And yes, I considered selling my current RAM as well, but it's such a PITA to sell RAM and when you can pick up 2x512 for $100, it's hard to resell it for much more than 1/2 of that.

Commands-per-clock (CPC; i.e., command rate). The lower the number, the better. 0T would be ideal...but then that's wishful thinking. If you are overclocking, this may be one of the things you'll have to relax to avoid instability.

Well in response to all these questions about RAM here is a question.

I already have 2x512Mb sticks in my Motherboard with 2 slots spare. Assuming I get exactly the same type of memory type and speed etc which is better?

an extra 1 gig in 2x512Mb sticks

an extra 1 gig in 1x1024 stick

Replacing the 2x512mb sticks with 2x1024 sticks.

Through crucial, the above two are the same price but the question seems to be whether it uses Dual Channel. The third option is obviously going to be more expensive regardless of whether i can sell off the old ram.

Also, is going upto 3gig with an extra 2x1024 sticks advisable?

dont replace the 2X512 sticks...

just go w/ the 3 gigs. replace the ram if ur getting higher speed ram than what u already have
