AU 2: Electric Boogaloo

Thanks man. I enjoy the job. Sometimes it is so cruisy it feels like you shouldn't be paid but other times you think you aren't paid enough!
The people have a range of mental illnesses, and some more than one. If you met some of them on the street you would never know, but if they're becoming unwell you start to appreciate the nature of their illness. Luckily a lot of the time we can trouble shoot and support the person to implement management strategies to get them through. If someone is going downhill though we either send them home to their carer if that's a suitable course of action, or call an ambulance (with their permission). It doesn't happen very often though.

I've been thinking about the reserves lately: specifically OPSO in the Air Force, but they're not recruiting for that role
Might have to go army if I want an officer posting that isnt chaplain/health officer/nurse and is open for recruitment.

Yeah Air Force Reserve has basically shut down all recruiting except for some specialist roles. The problem with Army GSO is that you don't get to specify your job before you join, so you could end up as anything really.

Assessment day is a piece of piss. As for OSB it is fairly different for each service. The main difference for the Air Force vs Army OSB was that the Army one has a lot of group activities and that sort of thing, while the Air Force one involves giving a speech with no script etc and a VERY long interview. Main thing they are looking for in OSB is potential. Good grades help, as well as a consistent record of employment/involvement in teams etc and obviously reasonable fitness. You also need to show that you have the right personality. You don't want to be the one talking over others and trying to be the big Alpha male, and you don't want to be quiet/unseen. You just have to try and strike the right balance.

Argh, that blows. Any idea why they did that?

I've been considering army for some time, its just that the work around Brisbane doesnt have anything aviation related which I want to use to compliment my degree - which is why Air Force at Amberley would be so perfect for me.

Well as far as I know it is partly a cost cutting measure. The fact is that most Air Force jobs (unlike many Army jobs) are best filled in a full-time capacity. You aren't going to have part time engineers, pilots, ACOs, JBACs etc considering the limited number of positions/aircraft there are. Having reserves expensively trained in areas that they may not do much work in is not a great investment. Getting someone in full-time and knowing that they will do that job for a minimum of 4 years is a better investment.

Bottom line is that the Air Force only benefits from being able to maintain greater numbers of operational aircraft and intelligence/logistics capability. Unlike the Army, we do not benefit from having large numbers of partly trained personnel.
