I just woke up, and then one of the guests at work kept walking around so I couldn't go back to sleep. Had an hour's nap when I got home and went back to work.

Yeah, wasn't fun. But I got to see E3 live

Respite house for people who have a mental illness.
Basically a glorified house keeper half the time, though on occasion there are emergencies (not very often) where I have to call an ambulance.
Other times I sit and talk when someone is feeling mentally unwell and lend an ear. Though we're not counsellors the line does get blurry at times between having a conversation and counselling.

Awesome, what sort of people do you get there? Like from clinically depressed to completely insane?

We're on the non-clinical side of mental health. Basically, think what a psych ward would be like, and then picture the opposite side: people aren't manic, completely drugged up or going through a psychotic episode. In saying this, we've still had people say they've been hearing voices, be quite depressed (clinical depression), have strange behaviours due to their illness and/or side affects from decades of taking lots of medication, etc.

We have anyone from age 18-65 who has a diagnosed mental illness AND must have a carer. Our organistation is to support the carer, so they have a break from the caring role and the person with the illness stays with us. A lot of the time everything kinda ticks along and whilst you're there as a support worker and have a chat to the guests (up to four at any one time staying) there isn't always a lot of big issues to deal with. Every now and then a guest will stay who has higher needs and more challenging behaviours, which can make a shift go longer but you take it all in your stride and it all works out one way or another.

Most confronting thing I've had to deal with was someone cutting their wrists in the middle of the night. It wasn't a suicide attempt (I could explain why but it's a little lengthy) but to be woken up with that, yeah, a bit full on. All worked out fine in the end, all things considered.
