Time for a minor overhaul.

Original specs

Antec server case (the generic "server" style from like... 5 years ago)
Antec TrueControl 550W
AMD XP2800+
1 gig Corsair (2x512 Dual Channel)
Abit NF7-S rev2
Floppy, DVD-RW, DVD-ROM
FX5900
Onboard Audio
MX Duo Keyboard/Mouse
Logitech Extreme 3D pro joystick

The new setup.

LanLi PC-60 case
Antec TrueControl 550W
AMD XP2800+ (gonna crank the o/c back up past 3200+ specs once I clear off the dust and get it running cooler again. Thermalright AX-7 heatsink /w Vantech Tornado 80mm)
2GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMSC2pl
Abit NF7-S rev2
Pioneer Al Bezel 16x DL DVD-RW (ditching the floppy and other drive)
GeForce 6800GS(Unlocked the 4 extra pipes and 1 shader to make it a GT, then o/c'd to Ultra specs)
SB Audigy (scored this off my parents old comp)
Logitech G5 mouse
Logitech G15 keyboard
Logitech Extreme 3D pro joystick

After selling my old graphics card, getting the keyboard and mouse as a gift from a very loving girlfriend on our 3 year anniversary, and then buying the new graphics card, tower, and RAM.

I'm looking at a 333$ upgrade for everything delivered. And it'll look like new and most importantly look CLEAN. My old case is so thrashed, dust stains, and that window thing is over rated I have to say. I did the LAN's when I was younger, but I've grown past that stage of my life with the neon lights and UV reactive cables. Wanted something nice and professional looking, and I think the LanLi fits the bill nicely. With a fresh format of Windows XP, it should be good for a while. Won't be the fastest, but ya know, I think it'll prolong this setup for a while.

Comments?

Late night Typo... meant 6800 Ultra.

Basically +50 core and +100 RAM on the clocks.

Temps are a little hotter than stock, but well within limits.

Got a question on unlocking the extra pipes, did you experience any artifacts when doing it?  I've heard from random forums that unlocking the pipes creates issues with clear textures (glass, some leaves, chainlink, etc.) and wondered if you've noticed anything out of the ordinary.

Thanks:)

Nah, it looks crystal clear. I'm happy to get that extra boost to 1280x1040 out of it.

The overclock was on stock cooling as well. The chip just doesn't run hot, unless my probe is f'ed but even then I'd be seeing artifacts in game. Maybe I got lucky?

Bought it after seeing the review on overclockers.com. It's a PNY 6800GS. If I pop off the stock cooling to go with better aftermarket, I'll get a glimpse of what chipset I have on there.

Has some SERIOUS texture stuttering at the beginning of the round though, and I'm hoping the 2GB of RAM upgrade fixes that. After that goes away(30 seconds or so) it's fine for the rest of the mapset.

Never could get into consoles. The Xbox 360 was cool, but it all justs costs too much now for me to give in. I think my PS2 will be the last console I own for many many years to come.

EDIT:: course.. now thinking about it.. what doesn't cost money when it comes to computers...... it all costs assloads of money.... I just don't enjoy consoles enough to forkout the money for them now is what I think I was going for

I have the same problem, even with 2gig.  I was wondering if I'm the only one.  It seems like mild to medium lag for about 15-20 seconds, then clears up and runs smooth from then on.

I'd karma, but it says I don't have enough

you wasted over $100 on the mouse/keyboard that you bought that I would have saved to upgrade later (motherboard+cpu).  But I will leave that one up to you.

And a $5 can of spray paint could have spiffed up your old case, saving money there for later too.

My MX duo setup is ancient, well used and has had much milage to and from LAN parties. Also has had a few attacks from soda   Keys don't always register and my mouse doesn't charge properly.

My girlfriend paid for the setup, not me. It was a gift. I'm not about to tell her that I want her to return it and get me something else. Not to mention the fact I already got the graphics card, so if I upgrade to a new mobo (with PCI-Ex16), what good will my new AGP card be?

I spent 333$ total.. delivered... People spend more on graphics cards than that, and I feel like I will have a newer system that runs nicer, looks cleaner, and can handle games better.

Not to mention I love this "saving" money mentallity. I'm over 20, in college. I pay 75$ every other week for groceries, 570$ rent every month, 100$ for cable bills, and 40$ for power.

I don't "save" money... because it will get washed in with the rest of the bills. If I have a small surplus of change, I'll spend it

Bummer, was hoping 2 gigs would clear it up. Oh well.. if anything I'm sure it will go away faster. It's just a minor inconvenience for me. If it bothered me terribly, I'd just turn my textures down. (fat chance of that )

ahh sorry missed the part about the keyboard/mouse gift.  congrats on the 3-year anniversary.  I know what it is lik to have some crazy bills in college.

Don't forget, there is the ASRock motherboards that have the AGP and PCI-E slots.

Thankyou for the congrats.

Didn't know about the dual AGP and PCI-E slot mobos. I'll have to check em out. I still figure I'll wait until next year before building a new comp. After that Direct X 10 will be in full swing, and Vista will be out, as well as probably a new line of graphics cards. That and I'll most likely have an intership where I'll hopefully be working for more than 7$ an hour (man I hate BS jobs) . Then I'll be able to afford something kickass. This is just to hold me over until the next group of cool stuff hits the market I don't see any games worth upgrading(1k$+) for right now.

Better bang for your buck (next time you find some change in the couch) is to get a fry's speical (if you don't have one near look for an outpost special) on a semperon 3100 with an ECS nforce 3a mobo for around $80.  The mobo is still a AGP style you'll be able to keep your video card and still DDR, so you can keep your ram.  I've bought several to setup customer computers and they are ROCK solid at 250Mhz FSB.  That puts them at a 25% overclock on nothing but any old generic $10 socket 754/939 HSF.  Tomshardware's cpu guide puts the semperon 3100 as faster than a XP 3200 when both are running stock speeds, so add in the roughly 25% overclock and you're looking at quite a jump over your 2800.
There are other guys that have pushed this setup much farther, but you have to use clockgen since the mobo only goes to 250.

I used RivaTuner.

I'm not on my home comp right now, so I don't have the detailed instructions. Something like Low-end system specs inside the RivaTuner menu. Then I disabled hardware blocks, and then enabled the pipes and shader inside the advanced layout or something or other(bare with me lol). Just filled in the checkmarks. Rebooted for new settings to take effect, and voila. Had it set to auto detect what graphics card it was, and it registered as a GT. Then I overclocked the core by +50, and the RAM by +100 mhz using RivaTuner as well.

Hope this helps. If you need more detailed instructions other than those off the top of my head, then I can provide them later.

Not bad, considering the additions made. It should hold you for awhile, until you want to start playing 2007+ titles.
