Prolly a dumb question. I assume you're talking about Mandarin.. ?
Yeah mandarin lel.
I speak fluent mandarin and semi-fluent in Minan/Hokkien/Taiwanese lol
Fuck I need to learn cantonese, too many hong kong people in Sydney lol.
Most of the Chinese in NY speak canto, but everyone seems to know 2 or 3 other dialects.
Canto and Minan/Taiwanese is a lot more similar to each other than mandarin, but still huge difference. I guess it's like the difference between romance languages. one good thing is that theres a uniform writing system lol.
Mandarin is most common in China, Cantonese is used mostly in Guanghzo, Canton and Hong Kong and Taiwanese/Min nan is used in Taiwan, Fujian and some parts of the coastal south. Theres also Shanghaiese which just sounds like terrible chinese opera lol.
edit: Forgot about Hakka which sounds terrible as well, its slightly used in Taiwan too.
