I'm looking for some advice on a video card upgrade.  this is for my uncle who mainly plays flight sims / fsx.

currently he has:
- intel Q6600
- asus P5K Deluxe mobo
- 8GB ram
- 9800gtx video card

Any thoughts on a new video card that won't be too held back by the cpu?  looking to balance this system out with a current gen card.
thx.

I'd say a GTX 460 or 560 Ti, something along those lines.

What's the difference between Ti and non-Ti versions of the GTX cards?

go with the 460, 560 might get held back by the cpu.

I've got a EVGA GTX460 and it's a beast.

A GTX460 is a decent mid range option for the money, but if you've got the cash your best performance option would be a GTX560 Ti and a aftermarket cooler so you can overclock that Q6600.

With a decent overclock the Q6600 is still a decent CPU.

Thanks guys.  I'm probably going to go with this:

EVGA GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP
$169 after rebate.

What resolution is he running?

If it's not a high resolution then the 2GB won't be worth it.

I would grab this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814130571

and then spend the money you saved and get a CPU cooler so you can overclock. Something like this

I'm running a Q6600 and a 9800GTX at the office and don't even need to OC either at all for satisfactory performance. He should be fine with an upgrade to a 460. If his board has SLI, he can use the 9800GTX for physx if he wants to be a nerd like everyone else.

e: NM on the sli for that board

AFAIK FSX uses insane amounts of CPU power. Considered an upgrade to a Q9550 or something along those lines?

Can't comment on the processor much, but they are supposedly very overclockable.

I have a 1GB ASUS GTX460 and it's a real beast. I'm pretty blown away by what this card is capable of. It's not the hottest thing since sliced bread, but considering the price/perf, it's hard to look away from. I imagine that the GTX560 isn't too far off in terms of price/perf, either.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

They brought back Ti?

Fuck yeah, those things could play GTA3 so good.
