i'm still of the opinion that no video-game is art, so a sandbox game isn't going to be the first to break through into the category...
I would agree that stuff made in minecraft definitely isn't art, but to say an entire game (any for that matter) isn't?
-a lot- of work goes into creating one and I don't think it needs any less thought or skill than writing a book or making a painting.
the thing is, a book of artistic merit is conceived of by one mind-- it's a staggering work of talent by a genius.
a game is a sum of its parts, worked on by lots of specialists each contributing their part. i wouldn't say it's art, on that basis. it's not an 'art' to do the physics coding for a game engine; nor is it an art to do the character voice-overs. you're doing work that involves talent and skill, but to an entertaining end, not an artistic one. it lacks high-vision and purpose. it's an interesting view, though, i agree, to view a game in-itself as an artistic artefact. as of yet, though, i don't think any computer game is approaching enough cohesion and unity to be considered as one singular 'idea'.
I cant agree with this.
You state movies can be a work of art (true), but a game cant because its is being made by different departments with many different people working in it?
Thats bullcrap. The same thing happens in movies.
Now i know that coding an engine isnt art, but neither is editing sound for a movie.
Now i know some might think: But a movie comes out the imagination/mind of a single person.
But this also goes for games (not for a lot though).
With movies and games its all about the final product you end up with that can be called art or not.
