you would rather work to have them changed rather than just not do drugs? Knock yourself out. I got more pressing things to do with my life than WORK to make life easier for drug dealers and drug addicts, like.....watch tv.
T total then lowing?
until the law is changed and all crackheads are free to blow their minds at will, I guess so.

well they pleaded guilty to something. Might wanna go back and re-read it.
Just because they're in their presence does not mean the kids knew about it. Another reason the law is wrong.
ok you did read where they pleaded guilty to selling and possession? right?
Yes. But 12 years?? This is where I KNOW the law is wrong.
Despite the fact it is the law, the punishment does not fit the crime.

Parts are. Just as parts of every state/country are.
Nah, the whole state could suffer another Dust Bowl and I wouldn't shed a tear. Between the speed traps and the flatness and ignorance of it's population it's one state that is essentially useless

Honestly, shouldn't fear of being prosecuted be enough to keep you from dealing illegal drugs? If not, oh well, enjoy your stay. I simply can not bring myself to feel any concern for this woman's plight. I just don't care.

I'm saying it is wrong to sentence her for 12 years for the crime.

Speed traps: yes
Flatness: yes
Ignorance of the population: depends on the topic and location, just like everywhere else

Back to the OP: The sentence does seem quite harsh, particularly if it was a first offense. What wasn't clear was if this was a second, third, or other offense for her. If that were the case, it could explain the longer sentence.

From the local news station (cut and paste of various pieces of the article):

All three first-time felony offenders were booked into the Kingfisher County Jail.

Patricia Spottedcrow pleaded guilty to her crimes as well.

She faced the very same two felony charges as her mother, Dee Starr.

However, Spottedcrow got a 12 year prison sentence, no probation.

She was sentenced to 12 years behind bars for selling two baggies of marijuana worth about $30.

Patricia says, "I've never been arrested. I've never had to spend any time in jail. I knew I was in trouble. I knew what I did. I didn't try to deny it or hide it. But I never thought it would be this."

The judge was Susie Pritchett; a four-term veteran of the bench with a reputation for being tough on crime, particularly tough on drugs.

Pritchett retired a month after she sentenced Patricia Spottedcrow to 12 years.

Pritchett says, "The sentence fit the crime. Ms. Spottedcrow was a drug dealer. Ms. Spottedcrow showed no signs of remorse, nor did she seem to even care about what she was doing to her children."

Judge Pritchett tells us the pre-sentence investigation report played a large role in her opinion that Ms. Spottedcrow would be best rehabilitated by serving time in prison.

Spottedcrow says, "I slept next to this girl here. She's in on manslaughter. She did three years. She was here for a year, and she's gone. I look around at all the people around me. All the things they did. People are here on trafficking two and three times; busted and busted three and four prison sentences and they don't have near as much time as I do."

We uncovered a number of other cases out of Kingfisher County where defendants with prior felony convictions were sentenced to probation or weekends in jail and no prison time.

In fact, one case that went before Judge Pritchett, the wife of a county deputy was busted with marijuana hidden in her underwear.

She was asked to apologize to the judge and never served a day in jail.

Former Judge Pritchett would not confirm or deny that incident but says, "I treat drug users differently than I treated those who pushed drugs, especially when they sold in front of children."
Sounds like a case of judicial activism to me.

What about the $1,200,000 approx in YOUR tax dollars it will cost to keep her in prison for 12 years?
$1,200,000 for $31 of pot. Somehow surely you can see that doesn't add up.

I do not want to be in trouble with the law so I stay out of trouble. Pretty simple concept really. It  isn't all that difficult either. For those that find difficulty staying out of trouble, yeah well, I guess they have a real problem don't they?

on that point I have no argument, hence my reasoning to legalize drugs... Our govt. gets all the money, and the crackheads wind up in an early grave, saving oxygen for the rest of us to breathe.

No way, drugs should NOT be legalized.
They should be DECRIMINALIZED.

legalization is a better argument, to be honest... it involves some form of safety and regulation about drugs. merely leaving them to the free-market just ends up with them being cut and laced with all sorts of shit.

Legalization will never happen though, at least not in the foreseeable future.
Decriminalization is a lot more achievable whilst still being a deterrent for the manufacture and sale of drugs.
Mandatory minimum sentences for the common user is just ludicrous.

Legalized would open up a whole new industry, with billions of tax dollars collected easing MY tax burden , while thinning the herd of idiots who are addicted to drugs.. A win win.

Because of it being Illegal, Illegal stuff tend to be extra expensive. And quite frankly I think the woman should be in Jail for 1-4 weeks.
