There is no one best virus program.

I've always been a fan of Symantec for real-time protection, they do a good job of not impacting performance. Not sure how the other clients have been doing, but I imagine they're the same. MBAM is great if you just want scan protection and don't want to pay for the real-time protection at all, though.

Real computer security doesn't rely on one defense but on many.

MSE works for me.

I don't download anything except for driver updates, windows updates and games/patches, so that's all I really need.

If your using norton almost anything is an upgrade.

I've used AVG and Avast in the past but I went with MSE on my last install and am happy.

MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials)

Complemented with a side helping of Malwarebytes and/or Spybot S&D

And then you can season with "Malicious Software Removal Tool" (Microsoft), HijackThis, CCleaner and maybe even PeerBlock

And then for desert, use a browser such as Chrome or Firefox and get an Adblock extension for it.

Or if you're really crazy, go with NoScript too.

The majority of virus protection is down to common sense, though.

Yep my basic setup as well.  And correct the best anti-virus is common sense but not everyone has it and I also have a few people who use my PC from time to time who may not have it.

I use Norton because it comes free from Comcast. Used to use McAfee which Comcast used to give.

AVG. Been using it for three years now. And it's free.

I used to use Avast and AVG. Now I prefer Kaspersky or Eset Nod 32 in addition to Microsoft's own countermeasures, with the occasional Spybot S&D.

If you decide you should be spending time and money using more than a few applications for cleanup and prevention, you should probably just get a Mac.

I've heard common sense claimed as the only thing protecting people's computers as they brought them in to the place I worked...only to have me install AV software and scrub all sorts of crap out of them before their very eyes.

Perhaps you should not relate to such failures.

i didn't have any type of protection on my computer for about a year, maybe a little longer.  I had no virus, problems, etc.  I installed MSE because it's got a small footprint and i figured why not.  But like I said I don't do much downloading or browsing of porn sites.

Some people you just can't help. Every 6 months or so I have to get some crazy-weird virus off of a friend's laptop who clearly is downloading stuff he shouldn't. Even with Avast, SpyBot and scheduled scans as well as real-time protection, he still manages.
