A new national alert system is set to begin in New York City that will alert the public to emergencies via cell phones.

Presidential and local emergency messages as well as Amber Alerts would appear on cell phones equipped with special chips and software.

The Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency said the system would also warn about terrorist attacks and natural disasters.

Verizon and AT&T, the nation’s largest cell phone carriers, are already on board. Consumers would be able to opt out of all but those presidential messages.

The announcement of the new emergency alert system came Monday in the wake of Osama bin Laden’s death and an uptick in security and safety concerns around New York City.

For now, the system is capable on certain high-end cell phones but starting next year, all cell phones will be required to have the chip that receives alerts.

By the end of the year, the new system will be in place in New York City and Washington and in cities around the country by the end of 2012.

Unnecessary government intrusion into our lives or a necessary move for public safety reasons? Federal Government linked chips mandatory in every cellphone really sound terrible.

Why do they need a chip? Is it like a GPS in an iPhone and they can send texts out in a given radius to those phones, rather than by number?

Will you have to pay to receive the messages?

Yes.  My iphone is pre 4.0 software release so the apple tracking file isn't on my phone.  I do realize and recognize the differences between the three, but still.  Fucking extra government chip in my phone?  fuck that.

Why is a chip required? Why not just make an app...

It's got nothing to do with a tracking file. Your position can be triangulated by your relation to cell phone towers in the same way GPS works.

Yes, but I think he's referring to the tracking file that logs everywhere you go and sends the data back to Apple.

Just updated to iOS 4.3.3
Personally, I honestly don't care if they track where I am, there are millions of iPhone users and my activities aren't illegal. But I still feel it's a breach of privacy.

Because I'm sure there will be GPS involved so we can all be tracked by cops. We're all criminals until proven innocent ya know.

you have to be super sceptical about this. a federal chip in every single phone? even if it's just used for a claimedly innocuous and beneficial purpose (e.g. disaster alerts) - you have to think about the potential for harm. it's a huge invasion of privacy and individual rights to force every single mobile phone to have a government chip in it. what sort of telecommunications freedom is that? the patriot act has already been mentioned... is it really so improbable that, given an emergency in the future, more legislation/bills like this could be pushed through with haste and little democratic consensus? in that case, you can see these chips having a more malign purpose in the potential (and foreseeable) future.

in principle (not use) this isn't very different from the proposal for identity cards that the uk government tried to push through. that proposal was flattened, thankfully. having anything on your person on a daily basis that is government property, or at least a government interest... very uncomfortable with that thought.
