Funny, I'm registered Libertarian.
i'm a registered republican (since 1984) and i vote my conscious. it's important to me to vote locally, about issues that have a direct impact on my life. any of you that bitch about politics and don't vote can fuck off.
I've voted in every election since I turned 18. Even the off-year elections

I didn't vote this year because I couldn't decide whether to register in Connecticut or Oregon and then decided to register in Oregon after the absentee deadline had passed.

Good thing you don't have a two part - oh, wait.
There are actually strong variations in each party.. although they do tend to gravitate to the center come election season. Then it's time to vote the party line . Over the years each party's position has varied. Democrats used to be the party of strong National Security. Republicans used to be the party of freedom and individual rights. Don't get caught up in a name. Jeffersonians were Democratic-Republicans. Also, we have had other parties. They could not sell themselves to the majority. Really, it's a swinging pendulum. .. like in many other countries.

the problem with american party-politics started in the 1960's when the reformist left devolved into a cultural academic left and when everyone else had to slide to the centre to please the silent majority. politics in america hasn't recovered since.
If you consider the '64 Civil Rights Act to be an academic exercise, I guess.  That was the last major event to define US party politics.

I agree that what the Republicans have been up to of late has been completely ridiculous and based entirely on spiting the other party. But you know, the Democrats aren't that great either. At least Obama seems to try though.

We're talking about the Republicans here.

Plus, at least Edwards was highly criticized for his actions. We know what Newt's done and yet he still has a decently sized following.
