As much as I like Bill Maher, I think if you're still in a Republicans-Democrats, Liberal-Conservative mindset you're a myopic dumb ass.

I completely agree with you. But as AussieReaper so elegantly pointed out - there are only two parties...

the problem with american party-politics started in the 1960's when the reformist left devolved into a cultural academic left and when everyone else had to slide to the centre to please the silent majority. politics in america hasn't recovered since.

We don't vote by party, we vote by candidate. A NJ-NY Republican is a whole different animal from a Alabama Republican. A Florida democrat is nothing like a NJ-NY democrat. Conservative in the NE is liberal in the southwest. My state is overwhelming registered democrat and we elected one of the most economically conservative governors in the country.  Despite being a republican he wouldn't be able to defeat a democrat in Iowa because he isn't socially conservative. Broadly using a label like liberal, conservative, democrat, republican doesn't at all explain the nuances in the American politics that you will never understand unless you actually lived here and look at it from more than a 'what's on TV' perspective.

It may make good TV to push a liberal-conservative/republican-democrat/us-vs them worldview but it's nothing close to reality.

Bill Maher is still my favorite comedian though.

Highlighted for emphasize.

I'll agree with you for the majority of your post except for the simple fact of the matter that the majority of America DOES vote along party lines and does not take the time to look at the tiny details of candidates. I lived in the US for much of my life and still continue to vote via absentee ballots and it's a sad fact.

And in my experience most people don't vote along party lines. It's why despite there being many more democrats in the U.S. than republicans control majority in the federal government swings wildly back and fourth between the two parties. 00-04 the Republicans had majority. From 04-08 the Federal government was mostly split. From 08-10 Democrats had massive majority in the Federal government. and from 10-11 to probably 12-16 it's going to be split again. From 16-20 we have a good chance of getting Republican dominance. Going by your logic of "people vote along party line" it shouldn't be swinging like that.

What are Republicans good at?
Getting themselves elected so they can funnel tax dollars they way they want - just like most political parties.

Supposedly, had all the people who didn't vote for Ross Perot because they thought it'd be a pointless vote voted for him, he would have won.

To answer your question, Republicans excel at appealing to conservative elements of the American voting populace, lying (like Democrats), and rigidly enforcing their narrow policy views on the American people when they have the power to do so (like Democrats).

Duh, the Republicans suck. Duh, the Democrats suck. That's why Fox spends all its time reporting on Democrats and Bill Maher... well does whatever the hell this is supposed to be. Comedy I guess.

I like Bill Maher, he makes good points. Why does he have to come across as such a smug cunt though?
