"Is torturing one life to save many worth it?" I'd say yes... The problem is that these things are done outside of the public eye and the results are unknown. Therefor determining if it was justified is near impossible. When it's a toss up I'd rather err on the side of individual rights. Blind faith in the government (any government) is very dangerous. History has shown us that when populations give up civil liberties it is extremely hard for them to get them back.

I have been to SERE school, so I know all about this. And the myth that people will say anything to make it stop is true to a point. But if he knows if what he says is bullshit, and worse will happen to him if he is lying, then he may gibe you the info you want. It is the same tactic cops use all the time. Not waterboarding, but the fear of worse punishment if you are lying.

One thing that keeps coming up is that torture isn't effective against committed prisoners.

What we have to realize is the kind of prisoner you're talking about.

Take John McCain. He was the son of a US Navy Admiral. He went to the US Naval Academy.

He's obviousley a man of strong faith and allegience. Years of torture didn't break him.

Now take your average terrorist - do they have the same intestinal fortitude of a man like John McCain?
