He couldn't have expected the pakistanis to protect him with any kind of real force. it's one thing to conceal him and keep him informed, another to engage with US forces. It's likely that he relied on a combination of circumstances. He would have most likely received a heads up if the Pakistani's were going to move on the compound. That's not flat out support. OBL relied not only on that, but their incompetence as well. This leaves the US military as the real threat, which he counted on being handcuffed by national sovereignty.
