lol... when has that ever stopped us? Pakistan is the real enemy in the war on terror... why has no one had the balls to admit it? This mass murderer was living in a fort and it took us this long to find him?Kmar wrote:

Well, no. It sounds like we've known where he was for some time.Spearhead wrote:

It does in fact stop us from operating some times. We've had to change the way we conducted air operations in the past with other countries because we were not given air space permission.Kmar wrote:
Yes. But there has always been that little issue of Sovereignty .Nic wrote:
Didn't they says years ago that there was a good probability he was hiding in Pakistan.Kmar wrote:

They think OBL was living there for years now. That area was under the control of the Pakastani military.. gee, do you think they knew he was living there?

I always thought the whole living in a cave thing was stupid. Impossible with his condition, let alone his ego.Spark wrote:

You didn't know about Pakistan?
AQ is to Pakistan as the IRA is to America.

I watched Al Jazeera English this morning and one of the individuals they had in the studio said the town where he was found was essentially one large military complex and the area he was in was very affluent and he lived among the Pakistani elite of that area there. Big WTF is right, Spark.

Turns out the SEALs did the deed, though. No real surprise there... BTW Kmar, according to the ABC article it was a team of 20-25 SEALs, not a team of 12.

Pakistan 'surprised' bin Laden was hiding near Islamabad http://bit.ly/k9T1oc

Id say the US told Pakistan that they where on a logistics mission. Landed their choppers. blew one up. Told the neighbouring Pakistan military base that they had crashed landed and had come under fire. Got him and pulled out.
There is no way the US would tell Pakistan they knew where his was. The Pakistan military and government is corrupt to the core and the main reason he remained at large so long.
Now Pakistan has no choice but to say it knew about the mission all along or the government will look really bad.
Glad they dumped him off a ship. No shrine, no burial on Islamic Soil.

I'm still amazed that they were able to get to him in Pakistan. One out of place utterance, even a rumor of spooks in the neighborhood and he probably would have vanished again.
I get the feeling they're trying to spark something controversial with this.

Nah, he has the entire ISI and Pakistani military there as his personal bodyguards.Reciprocity wrote:

They wouldn't fight for him, that would be an act of war against us, but they did everything they could to keep him concealed.Spark wrote:

They knew about this place for years. I'm sure they were waiting for all of the planets to line up right.Reciprocity wrote:

which is close enough. once the shooting starts it would be game over, i would think that there would have been a few cruise missiles aimed at the place just in case.Reciprocity wrote:

According to Steve Coll's book "Ghost Wars", the only reason Clinton never launched cruise missiles was because he never wanted to have a bunch of dead children and mothers on international news... that was back when bin Laden was deep inside Afghanistan, very deeply inside Talibanland.Spark wrote:

I'd love to know exactly how it went down. Were there distractions? Blackhawks aren't exactly quiet, and there were 4. When was the mechanical failure? There were only 12 members in the Seal team. I wonder if the plan was to converge on the compound from all directions, .. hence the "4" choppers. I'm kind of glad it wasn't just a missile strike. It sucks to put Seal lives in danger, but that fucker knew his ticket was up for 40 minutes.
I guess I'll wait for inevitable movie now.

He probably knew he was fucked as soon as he heard the choppers. It doesn't sound like he was set up for any kind of effective defensive action or escape. He was relying entirely on secrecy to stay alive.
Hey, it worked for a decade, didn' it?

Again, it doesn't seem like it was much of a secret to anyone beyond the general public. I'd be willing to even consider that OBL himself knew his compound had been identified, and that he relied on under the table Pakistani protection.Reciprocity wrote:
