There is a BBC accent all of its own, somewhere around Home Counties and received English.

'queen's english', dubbed 'bbc english', you mean? that's just a home-counties accent, yes.

and i don't particularly see how that's pretentious... seeing as most of the BBC (england) staff are based there...

it's like saying jessica simpson's southern accent is contrived and pretentious ffs

At the BBC-equivalent in Norway, the reporters/anchors/etc aren't aloud to speak local dialects (eg. southern-state or scouser) - is it the same at the BBC?

nope... bbc regional broadcasters/presenters speak the regional accent/dialect.

the centralized, standard 'bbc english' is a bygone thing.

Five today, Seven yesterday. Are these stories even making big news in the US. Something like that to Brit troops  would cause quite abit of alarm over here.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-11136507

Five American soldiers have been killed in three separate bomb attacks in Afghanistan, Nato said.

Home-made bombs, one of the main weapons of the Taliban, were used in the attacks in the east and south, it said. No other details were given.

The attacks come a day after seven US soldiers were killed in two bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan.

A single soldier's death - not even due to enemy fire - is enough to be headline news and push anything off (including very recent disputed federal elections)

They would have under the previous administration.

Depends on who the media likes/doesn't like over here, tbh.

Right... But that would make Obama look bad so the mainstream media won't do it.  It will be mentioned in passing on our mainstream news.  Back when Bush was President, it would have been major news and there would be a body count tally.  After that they'd do an emotional piece on a family who's got someone serving or lost someone.

I think the fact that its been common news for a good few years now might also be a factor...

Dude, they haven't done the bodycounts in newspapers in years. Those disappeared long before Bush left office.

There is also the fact that I think the total number of Australian deaths in Afghanistan since the war started is something like 15.

And Australians very generally dislike the war and hence every death is seen as a pointless one and hence major news.

I guess you'd have to say that they are now 'mainstream'.  I don't watch them either, haven't in years.
