Well, the point of the OP was to say that static speed limits don't make any sense. Should be dynamic based on the road structure like 50mph on the upslope, 60mph on flat areas, 70-75 on the downslope. Static speed limits fuck with the natural RPM cycle.

Well, the speed limit does make sense in term of Safety in certain area...they sure havent been designed to make it fuel efficient...not that i'd i would have something agaist dynamic one.

A lot of this is common sense, and practiced by a lot of defensive drivers. Also, being courteous and helpful to other drivers is good karma.

Unfortunately, a lot of people in the Tacoma-Seattle-Everett section of I-5 are pigheaded numskulls who shadow your blind spot and who'd as soon cut off their own finger as let you on or off the highway. You pass one of them up in a faster lane after they passed you? Be prepared for road rage as they zip past you again at 80mph, not looking at the road but gesticulating backwards with their heads craned around their seat.

Shocking wrote:

I don't know what the situation on the road is like in the US but over here the 55 mph limit was enforced for safety more than anything else. Actually, most deadly accidents happen on 55mph roads, so I wouldn't advocate upping the speed limits.
Much of it has to do with traffic density, average driver behavior and road conditions (as well as design). I've never 'nearly' gotten into an accident on the fastest highways in (eastern) Washington, but see and avoid them almost on a daily basis on the west side of the mountains.

These two things piss me off no end. If I'm behind someone for a minute and they're under the limit, why the fuck do they speed up as soon as I go to overtake? And if I'm coming in on a merging lane and I'm in front, why the fuck do people speed up so I then have to drastically slow down so I can safely merge? Motherfuckers.

Or:

You: Trying to switch lanes to get to the exit.
Guy right next to you in the lane you're trying to get to: Matching speeds with your vehicle, forcing you to dramatically speed up or slow down to get around him.

But if im caught with it...its a 600$ fine plus they take away my Detector...but well, it have paid itself by now!
Or.. you know... you could just go the speed limit... pays for itself in that it's free...

No, I'm crazy. There's no way you could drive that way. That would require moving one's foot from the gas pedal to the brake, which is simply absurd when you're trying to get somewhere.

burnzz wrote:

i've saved my ass more often by stepping on the gas pedal than the brake pedal, and i know that from experience one has to be ready for an 'out' in traffic, than be ready to lock up the brakes.
This has been the case a few times, but it's mainly because of the aggressiveness of drivers around me, or drivers not respecting the right-of-way and forcing me to hit the gas before they ram into me.
Yeah, but the speed limit is way less fun you know!

I dont over speed like mad tho, but still, that little thing RDD, awesome!

Its just a number on a dial, or is it the excitement of doing something naughty - a sign of emotional immaturity?

In a lot of ways, I'm sure if you take the time to think for once you'll come up with at least a few.

If you need someone to explain it for you... well, case in point proven to my previous post regarding this.

The only advantage I can see from having a computer drive your car is it makes drink driving a lot more safer.

Isn't that enough to make it all worthwhile?

Also, sleeping whilst driving would be awesome.

It would make overnight travel easier.

Early flight from Heathrow? Sleep in the car, it drives you down to the airport, wake up in time to check in

maybe i should explain to you why it works since maybe you don't understand.

kids don't want to go to school because they would have more fun doing whatever the hell they want.

you don't want a program to control your car because you would have more fun driving.

however, kids are required to go to school for the benefit of society

if programs were installed on computers that made traveling faster, safer, and easier, then the government should also take away the freedom of driving for the benefit of society.

You'd still need to have a way to manually operate it. Even subway trains have operators despite being able to run themselves.

e: Also, and while I admit it's avoidable with proper maintenance, automatic safety systems do fail:

LMAO. Your little analogy falls completely flat, and here's why.

Kids don't want to go to school for a myriad of reasons. Fun isn't the only factor, sunshine.
School is necessary for fundamental education. With a less educated population, a nation suffers as a result. It's got nothing to do with your retarded slant on "freedom", it's empowering children and teenagers to have more opportunities to do what they want to do as they become adults by having a greater knowledge base and skill set to apply to anything from simply knowing how to read directions on a map, or your electricity bill, to writing a thesis to complete a PhD so you may become a doctor. It's so people have the advantages in LIFE that they so need to maximise their potential for success and quality of life. Lack of education and bad parenting often go hand in hand.

Taking away the RIGHT to drive a vehicle for some fairytale idea of computer programs driving cars instead of people driving them is a childish notion that belies your ignorance and naievity. We don't always want to drive faster, or go in some pre-programmed route. Part of the pleasure of owning a car is driving said car. Why would you buy a Porsche if some program is going to do it all for you because the nanny-state government you want to implement takes away your right from ever driving it yourself?

I can't believe I wasted 5 minutes typing this out, because it will surely fall upon deaf, cotton filled ears.

uh..  you can use the 'benefit for society' argument for driving cars with programs too..  a nation with manual drivers would suffer more than a nation with programs as drivers.

too bad.  you shouldn't be on the road if you're not going somewhere.  driving around for the sake of driving around is stupid.  all you're doing is creating traffic and wasting gas.

you wouldn't buy a porsche since everyone would drive the exact same thing.  everyone would drive the exact same way.  there won't be any road ragers or tools with egos on the road.

Oh yeah, it's a great idea! I can just see millions of cars being switched to computer programs and everyone being totally cool with it!

Meanwhile, back in the real world...

Displaying those amazing reading skills again, son?

Saying I do not want to drive in a pre-programmed route has nothing to do with driving around aimlessly. Learn to think, it'll (hopefully) make you appear more intelligent/less stupid.
