I just discovered I can call Optus and get my iPhone unlocked for free, which is awesome because it means I can use a US pre-paid SIM and not be stung for the ridiculous roaming charges.

That being said, should I be getting a SIM from a telco like AT&T?

edit: going by a two year old thread on the Whirpool forums, my only recommended options are T-Mobile and AT&T?

iphone is covered by at&t and verizon here. Not sure if the phone will work with other carriers.

Ok, cool. I'll look into pre-paid AT&T SIMS.

Yeah it's definitely worth doing. I spent about 60 quid in 5 days on my phone one time I was in the US.

Just sent an unlock request to Optus, it was actually very simple, just need the IMEI number and use their automated service. They said they forward the request to Apple and once it is done on their end they send me an SMS and I just have to restore my iPhone using iTunes and then it is unlocked. Too easy

AT&T seem to do data packs on pre-paid, sweet.

If you unlock your iphone, you can use it with any carrier. make sure you get a micro-sim as per iphone 4 shit.

Yeah already knew about that bit. It was really easy. I got through to an opertator and she did it over the phone, then told me to "restore from backup..." (after I had backed everything up of course) and called me back to confirm it had gone well on my end, then said she was going to complete it her end. 30 seconds later she sent an sms saying it had been unlocked

So far so good, all coming together nicely. Next step is to get the backpack this thursday and then start looking into getting travel insurance.

Found out there aren't any micro sim pre-paid options, BUT you can cut a mini sim down to a micro sim and it'll work all the same.

This T-Mobile plan looks good, $70 a month for unlimited call/text and 2GB of data (click "see pre-paid plans" in step 2) - http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/prepaid.aspx

Got a Black Wolf Cedar Breaks backpack with daypack for $150 new, bargain

Now I'm in the process of choosing travel insurance... it seems to be trickier than I first thought. Anyone got any pointers to help narrow the field down?

I'm getting travel insurance, period. Some friends I was speaking to on the weekend came back from the states recently, one of them broke her elbow in three places on their first day there. If she hadn't had travel insurance the specialist and surgeon both told her it would've cost her $30,000 for the operation and treatment she received.

So Vegas is looking to be semi-organised soon (just accom and flight there from LA, the rest we'll decide where we get there). There are a ton of things I've been told. But what about San Fran? What are the sights and places I should check out there?

I think I want a mix of both. Just want make sure my brother and I don't accidentally find ourselves in a gay bar
Got no qualms there, I've been to the one here with some friends a few times before, just don't really feel like being hit on by guys.
