Nintendo's next console will debut at E3 in June, moving the maker of Mario and Zelda into the HD era. The news, first reported by Game Informer today, confirms rumors that have been swirling for months in the wake of slowing game releases from Nintendo.

Furthermore, we've heard that the machine will be more powerful than current-gen systems, meaning Nintendo, currently backing a Wii that is weaker in horsepower than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, will be showing a new console that is more powerful than those current competitors.

We've asked Nintendo for comment and will let you know if they shock us and spill the beans. Update: Nintendo responded to our inquiry with a standard "Nintendo does not comment or speculation".

E3 kicks off on June 7, though Nintendo's E3 press conference may occur the day before, if tradition holds.

Gamers have been waiting years for Nintendo to finally release its Wii successor, and Game Informer has heard from multiple sources that the company will unveil it at E3 this summer if not sooner.

We have confirmed with multiple sources that this new home system is capable of running games at HD resolutions. There are conflicting reports, however, as to whether its graphics will be comparable to those on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – meaning it could surpass or fall short of those systems. Either way it will offer competitive specifications. Moving to HD should greatly help Nintendo and its new console in getting more multi-platform triple-A titles like Portal 2 or Mortal Kombat. This, in turn, will strengthen Nintendo's historically poor relationship with third-party publishers/developers.

In fact, Nintendo is already showing publishers the system in an effort to get them interested and allow them plenty of time to start developing titles in anticipation of the system's reported late 2012 launch. This advance support marks a change from when the Wii launched. At that time, several Western publishers were outright surprised by the announcement, and it affected the software support for the platform.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata himself acknowledged that it needs to do a better job with its publishing partners at a 3DS press conference in the fall of 2010. "We need to decrease the concern that only Nintendo software can sell well on Nintendo platforms and third-party software cannot sell in the same volume. We feel a need to have closer ties with our third-party developers from the beginning."

Could this mean the next 360 next year? I doubt it seeing as I'd think they're going for a 10 year cycle extending to 2015, but it'll be interesting to see how they compete at this level.

the wii was never touted as an online gaming system, it's more for casual gamers with groups of friends.

Nintendo probably makes the most consistently quality games, so an HD version would be pretty sick tbh

Lets hope it is still powerful enough to be in better competition with next-gen consoles. I liked the wii when it first came out but disliked it didn't have good FPS games with online and mic support. Still am unhappy at getting COD 3 for wii instead of Xbox 360.

Another thing is I feel Wii 2 should introduce controller-less motion sensing as an option to better compete with PS3 and xbox as PS3 is sort-of ahead of the way in motion sensing as it offers both.

Edit: And I have a feeling microsoft will announce motion controllers

If Nintendo will make the Wii 2 compatible with Wii games (I don't think Gamecube compatibility is that important anymore) and allow some of them to be played online, I'm sooooo in.

New Mario Bros Wii online!

I've been enjoying the new Donkey Kong Country. With the exception of trying to 100% it by blowing all the dandelion things for puzzle pieces, the motion controls feel very natural, but the game is mostly done by pad and button.

I haven't bought anything on the Nintendo marketplace (the closest I came was Super Mario All Stars Wii for collector's value rather than value-value), but I'd hope things you bought on the Wii marketplace would work with the Wii 2.

Well I mean, you would hope so. But as I said I expect the 360 to last until 2015 and the PS3 till 2016, so it'll be interesting having a Nintendo console being the most powerful for 3 years.

I seriously doubt that Microsoft and Sony can get away with sticking to the same console for 9 years, while nintendo keeps launching new models.

I love how the first thing poseidon thinks when a new wii comes out is "Oh I guess that means a new xbox is coming out"

Well, If the new wii will be more powerful than the PS3 and 360. Then wouldn't it add more pressure to Microsoft and Sony to put out an even better system?

TBH, I would like to see a more powerful xbox, that's more reliable. Current 360s are weak pieces of shit that have no browser support, no proper music players (cant play any of my podcasts or anything, constantly not detecting my ipod.) a meager amount of USB ports, and it's just flimsy as hell.

Going to get rid of this piece of shit the moment I can purchase a half assed gaming rig.
