Isn't it interesting how the magnetic field lines outside a permanent magnet "emanate" from the north pole and are directed toward the south pole, and the strength (magnitude) of the field decreases as one moves farther from the poles? We have already noted that the pattern of magnetic field lines of a bar magnet is similar to the pattern of electric field lines near two electric charges. However, the two field patterns differ in one very important way: the magnetic field lines inside the bar magnet point from the south pole toward the north pole, whereas between the charges of the electric dipole the field lines are in the opposite directino. As a result, magnetic field lines form closed "loops". While electric fielld lines start on positive charges and end on negative charges, magnetic field lines always close on themselves, forming closed loops. This general property of magnetic fields is not limited to the magnetic field produced by a bar magnet.Jay wrote:
