So when someone burns the US flag and people get up in arms about it, whats so different?

The US flag is a symbol to us, in the same sense that Muhammad is a symbol to the Islamic world.
I don't see anyone in the states in violent rioting and killing people over a flag burning.
Here's one, you need to look.

Also it shouldn't matter, both are symbols, both get desecrated. Both instances are unacceptable.

Edit: It doesn't need to be in the ME for it to incite a riot lowing.

I would argue anyone willing to get upset over the desecration of a symbol has the problem, not the desecrator.

If a symbol is important enough to you to make you attack someone, you probably have mental problems -- whether you're religious or not.

Yeah, that was an overreaction on my part.  Sorry about that.

I don't know.  I just find it hard to sympathize with cultures radically different from my own.  Whatever happens over in the Middle East is really inconsequential to my life beyond affecting the price of gas and a few public debts here and there.

I guess it just makes me glad I live here and not over in that mess.

But then again, what would be the point of sympathizing with them anyway?   If our roles were reversed, it's not like they'd care about bombing the shit out of us either.

It's just a dog eat dog world, so you might as well enjoy the decadence partially afforded to us by all the messy shit we do overseas.

What happened to you Turq? You used to be cool and moderate. Now you're displaying some really weird misanthropic tendencies every now and then.

I appreciate that, I think....   but seriously...   I'm not misanthropic.  I just accept the fact that I have no power to change foreign policy.  It's fun to discuss, but at the end of the day, whatever happens in a place like Libya really doesn't affect me.

I don't see that as "retarded".  I see it as true.

lol...  did you really expect any different?

Any nation with our level of power would do the same if not worse.  Hell, we still look like Boy Scouts compared to what the Soviets often did.

Again, you can't blame me anymore than you can blame human nature.  That's why "fighting the good fight" seems so silly.

Just enjoy what you have, do what you can to acquire more, and be happy you don't live in a crappy place like Afghanistan.

Well, one thing they often did that we sometimes do is influence foreign governments through rebel groups.

They capitalized on rebellions in places like Cuba, for example.  They were kind of similar to us in that they often got support in far away places via a shared ideology.  They also influenced a lot of South America while we did the same through things like arms trade.

Don't get me wrong, we're similar in a lot of respects.

no but seriously, USSR didn't stage any serious invasion operations like we did in vietnam or korea. When we started loosing control with the "influence" ops, we sent the military in on those 2 countries.

Whether the USSR had the capability or not is debatable, but the fact is that they only used military forces in neighboring countries, which would be akin to us rolling tanks into mexico or something.

That was a race riot, obviously, if you read the article. Also it pales in comparison to the riots over cartoons. The irony being, the cartoons depicted Islam as violent and the the outrage over depicted as violent was punctuated by nothing but violence.

I won't even get into the fact that flag burnings in the ME does not incite murder and violent protests in the states. ( like I said)

anyway, feel free to get back to the point that you don't think it was moderates rioting.

He's been a neo-con since at least the day I arrived here.

He was kind of all over the place from day to day but that was always his compass bearing.

Look up the history of neo-conservatism. It's probably different from what you believe it to be at least slightly.

DST -- where posters discuss each other almost as much as they discuss issues.

Anyway....   I thought I already said that I prefer we stay out of most conflicts.  I'm not sure how that makes me a neocon.

All I'm saying is that I honestly don't care what happens in wherever the conflict occurs.   A lot of people like to pretend they care, but I don't bother with that.
