We're actually going backwards in terms of internet development. The latest issue has been usage based billing where ISPs seem to think charging people based on how much bandwidth they use would be a better idea than a flat rate with overage fees.

I am actually a fan of usage based billing. Someone like finray uses the hardware that backbones the internet a helluva lot more than I do so he should pay more to maintain it.

That said, $46 a month for 60 gigs is ridiculous.

It costs the ISP less than a cent to deliver 1GB of data.

Proof? They have to pay for their customer service personnel as well as corporate salaries. Maybe the actual cable ends up costing $0.01 per GB but salaries are expensive, especially in socialist Canada

Even with overhead I would be hard pressed to believe the expenses are beyond 5cents /GB

EDIT- Ebug, is that with Bell or Rogers?

i wonder if Canada is like the US where the US federal government subsidized the backbone of the internet to the tune of billions of dollars?  US taxpayers have already paid for the infastructure, seems a little silly to charge us again based on usage.

Maintenance ends up costing more over time than a fresh install does.

Rogers 10/0.5 Mbps

@Galt

Take for example Hurricane Electric Internet Services. Going by their advertised capacity of $1 per megabit per second, a 1 gigabit per second connection would run you $1000 per calendar month. A 1 gigabit per second connection is capable of passing 21.60 Terabytes of data per day. Assuming the calendar month is 30 days for the sake of this example, this simple connection could effectively provide at capacity 648 Terabytes of data throughput bidirectionally.

If we're counting just the total capable traffic, that $1000 connection divided amongst 648 Terabytes (648000 Gigabytes) comes out to being approximately $0.001 per gigabyte of data.

Now tell me, does that sound fair to you that you'll be billed $1.80/Gigabyte, when a small business can easily purchase ip transit and receive bandwidth that equates to less than a penny?
Source

I realize that's just a blog but it gives you an idea on the markup. Even with the cost of maintenance and employee salaries it's still gouging consumers.

And our infrastructure is rather shit from what I understand...old and outdated.

A South Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for impregnating a 9-year-old girl who gave birth to the baby.

Palm Beach County prosecutors say 33-year-old Fede Datilus was sentenced Wednesday. He was convicted of sexual battery on a person less than 12 years of age and impregnation of a child.

Authorities say Datilus impregnated the victim in 2009 when the two were living in Lantana. The victim's father learned of her pregnancy that March when he took her to a clinic. The girl carried the baby to term and delivered it when she was 10.

The victim reluctantly identified Datilus as the man who sexually assaulted her. She told a counselor that she was afraid of being returned to Haiti if she revealed what happened.
