Ok since he's a poor uni student and I'm a nice brother I have decided to build my brother a new rig for his birthday because he is in dire need of an upgrade.

He does some light gaming (CSS, BF2 etc) but also does a lot of music, image, video editing and A LOT of CAD stuff since he is currently doing his Masters of Architecture.

So far this is what I have picked.

Sapphire Radeon HD6950 2GB

Corsair Obsidian 650D Case

Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=13232

Intel Core i7 2600K
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=16416

2x Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=12711

OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=14674

G.Skill Ripjaws X 8GB
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=16509

Samsung DVDRW Drive
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=13068

Antec TP-650
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=13459

Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3-B3 Motherboard
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?mai … s_id=16862

Total: $1889

I realise the HD6950 is not a workstation card, but those are ridiculously expensive and I figure the HD6950 should be more than enough.

Anyway it should be a great upgrade because at the moment he is still using: 1.8Ghz C2D, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, 8600GT.

So, are there any comments, suggestions, improvements etc?

That looks perfect. Wouldn't change a thing.

Except buy it for me instead.

Bloody Scots

I'll probably wait till monday to order it since it won't get shipped till then anyway. So if anyone has any suggestions i've still got time to change it.

I'm not sure what to change it to but I'd stay away from the Vertex2.  OCZ did some sneaky move and the newer drives which use 25nm Nand don't perform the same as the older 34nm drives yet they didn't change the specs or name. (I bought a 60GB right before I learned of this).  The 25nm also losed more space to over provisioning and has lower writes available.

Yeah I almost fell into that trap myself but I was lucky and got a 32nm version. I will check with the store to see which they stock (some stores here have taken the 25nm off the market).

If they are stocking the 25nm version then i'll have to go searching for a different drive.

I would just look at other drives, the only way to truly tell is by either the formatted space or I think OCZ released a tool to check, you can't tell my model number.
