i don't quite understand why a bunch of teenagers are talking smack about baby boomers (read: dayarath) as if they've done anything fucking more conducive to the benefit of society.
They have also leeched more than their fair share from society leaving following generations to pay it off....

I consider the baby boomers to quite possibly take the prize as being the worst, most short sighted people in government ever. This holds true for all of Europe as well.
The funny part is that they've consistently labeled my/our generation as the 'selfish generation' for the past twenty years or so.

Well, I know quite a few kids at our youth group who's parents live off of the government. I hope their children don't follow their parents' example.

It's really funny how you pull the age card while being in the exact same generation, too. Had some 'knowledge' you wanted to share?

Baffles me everytime.

Me and my brothers assume we're gonna have to retire at 80+, think it's only going to take turns for the worse with the majority of the voting population consisting of retired or near retired people.

Doesn't even make sense, I like discussing things with people - if you see that as being an act to seem smart then well, sure.

And I'm not advocating pure isolationism either, but if you feel the boomers did/are doing a good job then - ok sure. I don't see why you need to back up every argument you make with being either insulting or condescending though.

That whole military-industrial complex is standing in the way of any concerted effort towards a more isolationist USA. You'd have a hard time justifying such massive defense spending when all you're doing is prancing about North America. I reckon it's still got something to do with us thinking we're light-years in front of the rest of the world while our own problems are creeping up on us. The US is quite advanced, but we've got issues that we need to deal with at home.

You actually deserve a better answer than that. The baby boomers have consistently underpaid on taxes which is why our national debt is so large. This is about to get worse as they retire. Our debt today is nothing like it will be in twenty years. We're absolutely fucked.

They've sent our troops off to die in foreign wars for the past century for no reason whatsoever. They've fucked up the nation socially by passing socialist programs that they didn't pay for while simultaneously being ass backwards with shit like the defense of marriage act. This country is good in a lot of ways shifty, but it's also completely fucked up in many others.
I read somewhere, can't find the article, the average baby boomer will receive $220,000 more in benefits over their lifetime than they've paid in taxes, Generation X and Y will be paying for it.
I'm surprised its such a small figure actually, I guess it excludes the additional effects of riding an artificially expanding economy.

As for the rest, if Americans weren't so paranoid, poorly educated and intellectually lazy you wouldn't be in this situation.

The US is quite advanced, but we've got issues that we need to deal with at home.
Pretty much the entire US infrastructure is due for replacement, roads, bridges, sewers etc etc.

So fuck off Europe. We all left for a reason.
I'm not so sure this part is true.

I would think that, if that was true, we'd spend less on the military and there would be more resistance to our interventionism via protests.

For example, the Iraq War saw a lot of protests, but the Afghanistan War didn't.

Isolationism seems pretty crappy to me. Didn't work very well for Britain in the 19th/20th century.

Yeah, the policy was begun under Disraeli (wrote my coursework on him but chose not to go into his foreign policy). I was referring to the fact that because the empire was so big/powerful (similar to some views people have on America) that the government thought it was possible to exist without any European allies.
It all went wrong when Germany unified and started to compete with Britain on a lot of levels (again, you could compare this to America).

There's a shitty wiki article on it but it's not too good:

Don't think I can think of an example in history where an invading force has successfully held onto an area in the middle east for any decent length of time.
