Core i3 370M 2.4GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM
ATI 5470 512MB
13.3" screen
5 hour battery life
aluminum chassis
€649

Any of you know of a laptop that can top this with a maximum budget of €700? Girlfriend doesn't do any gaming at all, just Internet, word processing and occasional light video editing. Important is mobility, hence the smaller screen and battery life.

Seems fine. Remember to reformat every 2 weeks to clear it of crap. Uninstall any bloatware, install browser of choice (I'm guessing Chrome for you), MSE, Malware Bytes, yada yada.

80 Euros more and it's missing a GFX? Fail.

these are Slovenian prices. It has a good battery life. Just a suggestion, glad that you accepted it that openly.

Well according to those specs, it lacks gigabit LAN, has a lower-clocked processor and only a one year guarantee. All for a higher price than the one that my girlfriend intends on buying. It also lacks a second GPU.

Just a quick bump and a question...

Do you think it would be worth waiting for the Sandy Bridge CPUs? Seems to be the i5-2410M will be the CPU that will replace the 370M and I am wondering if the gains in a dual-core laptop are really worth the extra €75-100 over the current i3-370M offered in this HP laptop.

If she's not gonna be doing anything high-powered, then what's the point? Lesser specs = more battery and it's comparing an i3 to an i5 for no stressful use, I see no need.

If she doesn't mind waiting and the battery won't be affected, then wait, I guess.

My thoughts, anyway.

No idea what the brand name is, but the specs on the first laptop you posted look fine. There isn't a point to waiting for something better unless she's currently happy with what she has.

Thanks for the responses. We're just going to go ahead and buy it this evening. Turns out there is a sale going on where she gets a €100 gift card for the store she's buying the laptop from. Doesn't get to knock the €100 off the machine itself, but it will be nice to get a bag and a skin for her plus whatever other accessories she might need.

I've already set up a Dropbox folder with a bunch of EXEs for various programs. Just gotta install Dropbox itself and then start installing browsers and utilities.

Sorry, I thought I posted it in the OP.

It's an HP dv3-4100EG. Seems to only be available in Germany/Austria.

I'm actually quite annoyed with it at the moment. Well, not with the machine but rather Win7. Tried to set up the Homegroup function but nothing was working. Did a whole list of stuff from Microsoft but couldn't get it working. Win7 Pro and Win7 HP, both x64. Laptop was wirelessly connected and the desktop is via Ethernet.

why didn't you format it first, then reinstall windows?

Why would I? It already has Win7 x64 on it...

Odd, I've always had homegroup work flawlessly, across 3 Win7 computers of various versions, an XP computer and a Vista computer.  I have no idea what I did that was special though

I found out the reason why Homegroup wasn't working, though. I have a WRT54GL and it doesn't support IPv6. In order for Homegroup to work, your router MUST support IPv6.
