I have 65 GB of photos I've taken over the last 7 years I'd like to keep safe. Between that the other 70GB of assorted docuements (mostly video, images, and stuff for websites -- it adds up quick) their largest isn't quite big enough. I imagine they'll add large options in the future though.
Get a couple of 500GB F3s, Raid 1 them, sorted.

Not at all, in fact. RAID protects from hardware failure. I already have raid (dual 1TB drives) where I store my data. No problems there. However, RAID does not protect your shit if it catches on fire, your file system eats it, or a virus deletes everything.Finray wrote:

by getting an external drive and only mounting it when you do a backup. But guess what, fuck that. You'll just leave it mounted all the time because doing otherwise would require actually putting effort into backing up. I actually have the ability to backup to the 300GB drive on Gibson, but all the programs for doing backup out there are like well shined piles of crap compared to Dropbox. There were things I required for the tool: sftp support, encryption at the remote, automatic sync, and versioning. Not a single program I found did all of those things and the ones that came sorta close were nowhere near pleasant to use.
However, with Dropbox, I don't have to even think about backup now -- it happens instantly for files under 1mb, I have infinite revisions of my documents (no virus can touch the historical copies and mess them up), and it's all offsite. Plus, if I get multiple computers, I can utilize them for their primary purpose, file sync.
