it annoyed me quite a bit yesterday when I was watching the coverage on BBC that they got someone on to talk about the instant impact it had on the Yen and electronics companies. They were saying that the Yen would drop, investors would sell. Kinda sickened me that some people only care about the money.
Same thing happened with 9/11. Gold skyrocketed afterwards.

Good article on WSJ that should calm some of the fears about the reactor, even if a meltdown does occur (and one seems to be occurring):

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 … lenews_wsj

Even if the Japanese nuclear plant damaged in the earthquake goes into full meltdown, it is unlikely to cause environmental fallout anything on the scale seen after the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, scientists said.

Japan's Fukushima Daiichi 1 reactor, located some 150 miles from Tokyo, began leaking radiation after sustaining damage from an 8.9-magnitude earthquake that rocked the country Friday. Japanese officials are trying to cool the reactor with seawater to prevent a full meltdown of the nuclear core and thus prevent a much larger, and potentially dangerous, release of radiation.

"As long as there's no meltdown of the fuel rods, you're in good shape," said Kirby Kemper, a nuclear physicist at Florida State University. But if pressure from gases in the nuclear core builds up, "a crack could appear in the containment vessel and release radiation," he added.

well that's the operative bit of information to your post, really, isn't it...

a buddy on his way from okinawa doesn't say "a guy in a helicopter flying over mainland japan"

to anyone else it sounds like you're worried or want to hear from a guy from an island thousands of miles away from the epicentre

yes, i'm perfectly aware. where's the issue? his post was vague. it needed clarifying. it's not as if everyone automatically knows that any concern for a 'friend' in 'japan' means a military associate that can fly a fucking aircraft.

No. Even if it does then it isn't going to destroy half of the world.

ya my sister lives in Tokyo, most of the power is back so is the gas supply & all mobile networks seem to running. There were lots of after shocks last night apparently but life is returning to normal. She even said that the government are on all the news channels trying to explain worst case scenarios about the reactor problem.

Reuters: The emergency cooling system is no longer functioning at the Fukushima No. 3 reactor, an official from Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency has told journalists.

Radiation leakage had already occurred, so I believe some melting must have already happened - but not severe enough to be labelled a meltdown though, as when this happens the entire core will vanish and there's nothing you can do about it.

Even if though, there will probably be no or little damage to the environment (compared to what could happen).

The danger would be if a meltdown occurs and water is still being added to or already is inside the core, the heat would dissect the water into hydrogen and oxygen, which could cause a massive explosion and spread radiation damage in a large area. I don't think this is a very likely scenario though.

I'm not all too sure on what can / won't happen, obv. I'm not exactly knowledgeable on nuclear reactors.

Well if that's the case they better make sure the core is dry. Do they know if the reactor's structure is still intact?

No, plus there are still fail-safes in place, steam can be released from the top to relieve pressure and I think they have limited battery power for if the generator failed?
