"The utility firm had been releasing air from the container of the reactor to lower pressure.

Pressure inside the container had been rising after the reactor's cooling system broke down due to power failure.
Radioactive substances have been detected near the reactor."

‎"The team is now getting ready at a nuclear disaster response center, located about 5 kilometers from the power plant." ..Japan Broadcasting Corporation"

I like it how some of you make fun of a disaster, where people die!

Dont forget to make fun of your next flood disaster, fire or earthquake. Or thats something different?

God bless the people of Japan in such a hard time!

And the reactor is only about 250km from Tokyo. Not good.

Didn't Japan say that the radiation, even if it exploded wouldn't go past like 6 miles of the reactor?

Not sure but they have already expanded the evac radius to 12 miles.

If the core melts it won't be enough in long term. Maybe enough for ppl to gtfo and not get radiation poisoning but the enviroment will be destroyed like in Chernobyl. Gotta hope it's not going to melt.

Update: Another Japanese official tells the AP that even if a meltdown occurs, it shouldn’t affect anyone beyond a six-mile radius — and most of those people either have been evacuated or, no doubt, are in the process. All eyes now are on the containment dome.

Note the time stamps. Needless to say it's an ever changing situation.

For example, the title of this topic is wrong.

what the flying fuck

HUGE increase in measurable radiation in the air before officials saying something's really gone wrong? Just like with chernobyl

I imagine it would have a lot to do with the wind direction and strength. Not to mention the degree of containment or lack thereof.
Right now we are talking about a leak. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/ … SS20110312

Walt Patterson, of the London research institute Chatham House, said "this is starting to look a lot like Chernobyl". He said it was too early to tell if the explosion's aftermath would result in the same extreme level of radioactive contamination that occurred at Chernobyl.

The explosion was most likely caused by melting fuel coming into contact with water, he told the BBC.

But the core must have been melting for hours before the explosion occurred, and they were already releasing pressure. I don't think it's all that likely to assume it was a steam explosion that caused this.
