The core is still stable, nowadays it's literally impossible to have a repeat of chernobyl in any modern nuclear reactor. There are so many self-correcting mechanisms + like 10 safety nets in case those all fail. And even then, there's still multipile feets of concrete to seperate the outside world from the core, or the reactor entirely.

Absolutely, I don't doubt the ability of these scientists who are monitoring the situation and the news isn't really focussing on that issue specifically so I imagine that it's not a major problem right now

People are really just terrified of nuclear power since chernobyl tbh, which is just a shame.

The only thing that can make it go wrong is if you drop a nuke right on top of a reactor

uuuuuuuum, no.

if a reactor's cooling fails (which the plant in japan's did), the core will overheat and literally blow the roof off, ejecting radioactive matter and debris everywhere. when chernobyl overheated and blew its top, it spewed a radioactive cloud that floated and fell over all of europe-- there are still regions in rural places such as north wales where the radioactivity is insane, and the ground/cattle are all poisoned. that's decades ago. nuclear plants are only a risk if you nuke them? oh dear.

If you live in a relatively stable country they're perfectly safe, but somewhere as earthquake prone as Japan seems a little more risky. I'd love there to be more of them in Europe, but Japan/California/Turkey I'd be more concerned about them.

A modern day reactor can stay uncooled for weeks without causing any major damage - 'cept to the core itself. Which ends up getting destroyed if all the water which is supposed to cool it is gone, melting it, sort of - but due to the design of the reactor radioactive leaks are largely contained.

This happens when the cooling system fails completely and the water disappears from the core - happens if both the main and internal backup power sources fail (due to the heat of the core, even when shut down, constant circulation of water is necessary to keep it cooled).

There are many different types of reactors though, some have passive cooling systems to prevent the core getting destroyed.

Doesn't mean it's perfectly safe though because there is probably still going to be some leakage into the environment, which is why it's absolutely necessary to evacuate anyone in the vicinity.

Nothing of the scale of chernobyl though, which, was also really an unfortunate chain of events in which ALL safety mechanics failed... during a test. Miscommunication, misreading, and everyone doing everything wrong at the same time.

yeah i understand that chernobyl is nearing the 'worst case scenario' end of the scale... but i don't think people want to even take the slightest chance with the minutest of risks when it comes to nuclear accidents. it's extremely bad PR, if anything, for nuclear power. the scale and extent of the damage almost becomes secondary to the fact that there has been a nuclear leak-- almost coming full circle back to your mention of people's irrational fear of anything bearing the 'nuclear' tag.

Well yeah, safe to say that a nuclear accident is probably the scariest thing that could happen because the damage is lasting, which is why I can understand the fear people have for it. But at the same time, there have been very few accidents compared to the amount of reactors there are around and how long they have been used. Something in the magnitude of increasing cancer risk for thousands will, I believe, never happen again.

It's definitely not the end all or as safe as all possible alternatives but the amount of energy it yields goes far beyond the output of any other method... nuclear fusion even more so (if succesful, more energy return than input) but that's arguably even more dangerous (imagine what happens if the cooling of a reactor wall in there fails, you have a live sun charring everything in its vicinity).

So I just heard from my sister who teaches English in an international school in Tokyo all safe & well, tbh I've been shitting it all day. I actually managed to get to speak to her via bloody facebook she is more worried about not being able to flush the toilet because it is one of these fancy electronic ones & there is no power.

I don't know what state tokyo's infrastructure is in but it wouldn't be a bad idea to try and get some emergency power supply.

Been out all day, just found out. All the best to everyone there, the death toll is going to be rising for quite some time, I can't even imagine what the costs in damages will be after the dust has settled.

8,000 times stronger than the one which devastated Christchurch, New Zealand, last month, said scientists.
Shit....

I'm worried about the nuclear plants. Does anybody with more knowledge of such plants know if they might go 2011 Tchernobyl?

well, they basically all but tried to meltdown the reactor. a task in which they "admirably" succeeded.

Certainly nothing major, but it's really crazy how it can make it all the way to SF.
