Not going into the red zone now (yes thats what they're calling it).

A bit of good news: Rescue teams from the US and NZ have completed their search of the Cathedral and, to their surprise, have found no signs of bodies despite being extremely thorough, and having gone back for a second look.  22 bodies were expected, I guess those people found another way out

Were they the ones in the tower? Somebody told me there was a tour going on in the tower when it collapsed.

I believe the 22 were inside the main part of the cathedral at the time.  There were people inside the tower, I've no doubt some bodies were recovered before the search teams went into the main part.  I was actually watching the lady in the window live at work when it was filmed.

Met a couple of the search & rescue people from the UK today, and thanked them for doing what they've done.  Really humble people, and quite overwhelmed by how the amount of gratitude Christchurch people have shown them.

Still haven't got the confirmation call that I'm heading down there next week, not sure if it's happening. Prepared anyway. Bloody army.

Well, its not as if NZ was ever going to invade anywhere.

Good luck with your deployment.

Too right. I mean it's bad enough to have to drop everything if need be but it sucks to have to prepare to possibly drop everything on the off chance they call me up. They wonder why I'm often unavaliable for some exercises? It's because I have shit to do mother fuckers!

My best mate also happens to be my Platoon Commander so I do actually get to talk to him like that, (just not when anyone's watching.)

A video from parts of the CBD.  Note that by this points, a lot of the debris on the road has been clear to allow access for emergency services and demo crews.  This includes some footage from inside the grand chancellor hotel.

Back now.

The city's pretty messed up but it kind of brings it all into perspective when you consider the impact of the Japanese Tsunami though. Still, Christchurch has one Hell of a rebuilding job to do - and that's after all the recovery and demolition work that still needs to be done.

The cordon around the Christchurch CBD is estimated by some of the cops I spoke to to be in place for about six months. I know there'll be a military presence there for at least another month, they're already organising another rotation from my Company so it looks like I'll be back in April. I think they may be trying to get private security involved instead, not sure, there are a lot of theories and rumours flying around.

As to my part - well I just manned cordons, spoke to locals and rescue workers. Prety dull stuff but very necessary and appreciated by the vast majority of people. On night cordon duty there was a group from a church who called themselves the Knights of Christ who came around early in the morning bringing food and hot drinks and staying for a bit of a chat. That was appreciated, just for breaking up the monotony if nothing else. Spoke to quite a few people who had lost houses and businesses, one bloke on Friday came by saying that he was trying to retrace his steps after the Earthquake, said he worked at the Balentynes store in the CBD and onely really has bits and pieces of the aftermath including some pretty terrible things. Was also talking to a USAR bloke who informed me that seven more victims were found on Wednesday including a five year old girl. Much respect to those guys, they have a tough job.

Worked with the Regular Force guys, got to say not a lot of respect for them. There were some stories about their conduct that floated around but I wont repeat them. I do know that the section my section relieved for the Friday shift used a vacated shop doorway as a urnial. Most of them are just tattooed children and have no idea how to interact with people outside the Army. Worked with Navy and Airforce pers as well. The Airforce pers seemed okay but some of the Navy guys were similar to the RF. I had to tell a Petty Officer, (eqivalent of Sergeant,) to turn his music down and stop swearing so much and so loudly at around three in the morning.

But yeah, manning cordons is pretty dull work so not much else to say. The only excitement my section had was when a hotboxed car with a learner driver driving his mates around without registration or a warrent of fitness tried to get through our checkpoint. So we got one arrest.

Was on the cordon on Friday so didn't see any of the memorial service. Closest would have been when Prince William's chopper flew over. No one was at work that day so that would be the most tediously boring day. Someone's got to do it though. Did get to fly back home on a Herc which was neat, a surprisingly comfortable but noisy flight.

Onya Ty good to see you doing the job, even if it is boring as all shit.

I've found it depends a lot on the corps. Infantry guys tend to have their head so far up their own arse they wouldn't even know there were other corps. Armour, Aviation and Signals are usually pretty good, more professional. I'm yet to meet a Navy PO or Chief that hasn't done an extended stint in Holsworthy (military prison), they get up to all kinds of shit lol.

But of course I have to say Air Force is superior

Hey hey hey, I'M Infantry.

That being said, Infantry have a masive ego. There is the belief - that is correct on some fronts - that every branch of the armed forces exists to assist the Infantry. Some guys let this little moral booster get to their heads sometimes, especially the RF boys.

Can't criticise the Air Force, everyone I met conducted themselves well. I don't think many of them liked the fact that they had to wear DPMs and so were constantly mistaken for Army. And that they have Vietnam era aircraft. And generally don't do jack shit other than transport. Still, one bonus is that all the girls seem to go for the Air Force. Navy seems to have near none, Army has a few but the ratio's not bad in the Air Force. Some are pretty good looking too.

Collected another nickname on this op by the way. Along with 'Seal', (my name was misread by a Corporal who kept asking me to sing "Kiss from a Rose",) and 'Doc', (my first three initials being PHD,) which also lead to 'Dr. Seuss' I am now also 'Ghost' - apparently because I can be at an O Group without being noticed as well as creep up on people at night. A few meetings ended with "... and can somone pass this on to Seay" with me having to point out that I'd been there the whole time.

But you're reserve infantry aren't you? Reserves are a whole other breed haha

RNZAF really does need some new gear. I mean can you really call them an Air Force when they have no proper combat aircraft and limited heavy lift capability?

I should probably stop going off topic before a mod arrives

This pissed me off.

A bloke by the name of Sir Paul Callaghan, an otherwise incredibly intelligent man, has suggested that all expatriate kiwis with outstanding student loans should do the heroic thing and repay them now so the approximately $2b owed can be spent in the Christchurch earthquake recovery. He has called on them to do the "heroic thing" in this.

What a dick!

Sir Paul and his generation were the beneficiaries of a system that meant their tertiary education was completely paid for by the New Zealand Government. His generation were also the ones who, after gaining the qualifications they wanted, (Sir Paul himself getting a free doctorate in physics,) tore down this system meaning generations X and Y are burdened with often crippling student debt. They also create a job market that does nothing for graduates, forcing many NZers overseas, mostly to Australia. Graduates are generally underemployed and paid poorly in New Zealand and overseas. Meanwhile Sir Paul's generation, the Baby Boomers, own the power and the wealth. They were the ones who immediately invested heavily in Fletcher Construction to profit from the Earthquake - because they could.

The Baby Boomers in New Zealand lived off their elders, consumed their wealth, were gifted their education, given a faultless safety net, consumed all the wealth they made and now have not only taken this away from their kids and grandkids but continue to live off them - the major concern in NZ at the moment is how all us younger generations can fund the retiring Boomers. All this while they continue giving themselves tax cuts and creating a housing market that heavily favours owners - i.e. them -  meaning we have a generation or two of people who's only option is to rent and are unable to gain any real assets of their own.

Sir Paul Callaghan, how about you call on your own generation to do the heroic thing? Even half a percent of the Boomers generation's housing equity alone, (i.e. not counting any other assets,) would cover the $2b you seek. You're calling on people who have yet to even build themselves a life to pay for a recovery that you will profit from. Either you're fucking idiot or you need a wheelbarrow to carry your balls around. I'm guessing the former.

Not only this but the Government and tax department agree with him, setting up a web page to allow those poor heroes to do their part. Sir Paul has started it as a project called the Heke Project.

Meanwhile, since I can not afford in any way to significantly contribute to the Christchurch earthquake relief fund, I will do what I can by providing security as a member of the armed forces, my second job after my part time job which I am forced to work to fund my University and meager existence which I make work on around $15K a year - and I still have to rely in part on a student loan.

And yes I'm a graduate too.

Fuck you Sir Paul.

(If you read the letter you'll see that Sir Paul did acknowledge that he was from a luckier generation with free tertiary education and commented "So who am I to ask?" But he still asked.)
