Hey guys whats going on?

I know this is more of a BF2 oriented board, but I figure you guys could probably help me out.  Basically my set up now is a Dell 8400... yeah yeah prebuilt.  Anyways the specs are :

Intel 925 XE MB
160 GB HD in a RAID 0 config
Radeon X300 Gfx card
Onboard Sound/Ethernet
SB Live Value Soundcard
IDE controller hooked up to an old IDE 80 GB HD
Windows XP Media Center 2005

Earlier this week, my computer crashed, I had to disconnect power to restart.  When I restarted a screen came up almost like I was installing Windows, and a whole bunch of lines kept scrolling.  After a while, it finished and restarted normally.  I didn't notice at first, but after a while I noticed that I was missing a LOT of data.  Thankfully, it was on my secondary HD that I use for multimedia.  So I immediately tried to do a System Restore, but there were no restore points, even though I used to have them.  Then I ran CHKDISK to try and recover the lost data, but sadly nothing was recovered.  The HD I had the problem with is an old (~4 years) from another system.  I have it connected through an IDE controller.  My question is, what can I do about this? Can I recover any of this? And what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

hmmm, well the easiest way i think is try bringing it to a best buy geek guy and ask them about data recovery. 
This same problem happened on my old 8400 too : (.  To prevent it from happening, well dell told me it was the hd driver or something. not sure ill ask them again .brb

Get a DVD burner and make backups of important stuff. Saved my butt more than once.

I would start by connectiong the HDD through the onboard IDE connections, and checking the jumpers etc although it doesn't seem youve messed with them. What did the screen say exactly when "a screen came up almost like I was installing Windows, and a whole bunch of lines kept scrolling"?? Either you were booting in safe mode or check disk was running at that point because of a previous fault - I assume the screen was blue with white writing?

if most of the stuff is pirated you wont have any quams about downloading a copy of "getdataback for fat32/ntfs" (different versions for each formatting), used that a few times with no problems. thats assuming the datas just been wiped, if the drive is corrupt not sure what to suggest.

pirated or not, i heard Best Buys geek squad got in trouble anyway for using cracked software.  Apparently they were in negotiations with a software company to buy the diagnostic software, and when the software reps were training some best buy employees, one of the brilliant geek squad members informed them that they had been using the software for awhile before that....and they werent supposed to be.  Negotiations were split after this, and the software company paid "customers" or employees to call out the geek squad for stuff and video tape it.  Turns out geek squad had the software and was using a cracked serial number for it.  This is what my A+ teacher told me, so if i had a link, i would post it.

You could format and start your collection over. Gives you a clean conscience that way. Nothing quite like a legit DVD. Run the drive in question through some heavy data transfer, then check to see if anything got messed up.

dude....i have tons of pirated software lol so dont worry about it.

Well there are no onboard IDE connectors, thats why I have it running through the PCI controller.  Yes, it was blue with white writing... but I don't think it was safe mode.  I've booted in safe mode before and I'm pretty sure that wasn't it.  As soon as I turned my power back on, my computer started doing all this itself without any prompting from me.  I'm not sure what it was.

Limed for great justice!

I've used getdataback, excellent program. Saved my butt a few times.

Nowadays I use symantec ghost and bartpe + ubcd. (for backing up and restoring backups)

I created a bartpe cd with ubcd and ghost. What I do is ghost the entire hard disk to one of the other hard disks. (you can also ghost to a network share on another computer)

Comes in handy, for example... I've created a bunch of ghost images of various stages of my windows installation. First activated, programs installed, more programs installed etc.

On the plus side if I decide to replace my system drives I can simply take them out (two SATA disks in RAID1) plug in the new ones and ghost my backup onto the new ones no problems.




Just to clarify, this lost data is not on your system disk but on a second hard disk correct?

If so, get your hands on getdataback (fat or ntfs depending on whichever it was formatted to) and run it.

Be patient also, it takes a fair while to recover stuff. You have to manually select what to recover and it sometimes does not fully recover the files, so you may end up with files of garbage.
