Bro I'm perfectly secure about my love for Disney films

This was a nice surprise as their non-pixar studios have not produced anything that I've really liked since Emperor's new groove way back in 2000.

No worries. I liked it, too.

I just remember going in to it thinking, "It's for the daughter. You're doing this for her. She loves princesses. It'll be OK."

Turned out to be pretty good, all things considered.

I laughed out loud at a couple of scenes...the bar scene in particular. My favorite of the movie.

It's a sort of sci-fi romantic comedy.  The movie is much lighter than the trailers make it out to be.  Like Inception, they pack in a bunch of tedious, bullshit, "god from the machine" plot devices they call rules so the audience can feel educated and clever.  But it's not as annoying because the movie doesn't take itself nearly as seriously as Inception even though the plot is actually more compelling in some ways.  The filmmakers' lack of enthusiasm becomes clear in the last act when the plot degrades into the generic third act of all romantic comedies.  but it's still a decent movie.

La haine (the hate) - 10/10
I was surprised when I found out that this movie was actually made before the French riots .
http://www.slate.com/id/2130073/

Great Movie. I really liked the screenplay. For example, there was a scene where a kid was talking to one of the characters (vinz). He was telling him about a TV show. At first it seemed like he was leading up to a big point, but he wasn't. That type of dialog makes me forget I am watching a movie. Usually the writers are trying to take you to a specific place with humor or emotions, and it is obvious. However, hearing the kid talk about the show in a most colloquial way, sounded like the bullshit we used to discuss when I was a kid. There were parts of the movie that felt (Classic) Martin Scorsese .. at least with the camera work.
Spoiler (highlight to read):
Like when vinz first showed them the gun. A fucking beautiful scene in terms of cinematography.

.. it seems like you are just hanging out with these guys, and because of this you really share the character's emotion. Spoiler (highlight to read):
I lmao when he fucked said's hair up.. "that's how they wear it in New York"

Spoiler (highlight to read):
The old man coming out of the stall and talking about the tragedy he had to deal with was brilliant.. It was like a wake up call to the Boys.. life is not fair, life is not just, shit has always been hard.. etc ..etc..

Spoiler (highlight to read):
The end kind of reminded me of American History X, in that the characters finally come to grips with their anger for another group, begin to move past it, and then someone from the other group kills them.
The first three spoilers are not giving a lot away .. but don't read the last one if you have not seen the movie.

This one gets my highest stamp of approval. Go watch it.

Why are people mentioning Inception as if it's the epitone of a shit film?

It really wasn't that bad, fuck. You'd think it was "Glitter" with the way people are droning on about it.

I don't even know why I watched that film anyway, probably because Mariah Carey is sexy.

Anti-fanboys. A bunch of people go on about how amazing it is, which makes people hate the film when they actually hate the people who like the film. Happens with everything that's popular.

not really.  its just that it got massively overblown.  it was a very good movie, just not the "OMG THAT WAS THE BEST MOVIE EVERRRR!!! MIND BLOWN HOLY CRAP" that the majority of people called it.  it also has very limited rewatchability, i fell asleep the second time i watched it.

Thought it was pretty cool when I watched it as I had pretty much no idea what it was about, doubt it'd be good the second time though.

You were right. It's a must see film. I was going to review it more, and point out some other things I liked about the film, but I found myself giving too much away.

I'm going to start exploring the foreign language subset of films more.

Also, don't forget to watch films in their original language if you saw them dubbed.

I'm usually fine watching french films in french without subs or dubs. La Haine had a lot of slang, and some of the characters (like Said) spoke really fast without enunciating. I never watch with dubs on .. most voice over actors suck.

Leon: The Professional

8/10

Glad I got around to watching this, it's as good as I hoped. Cinematography, scripting, pretty much spot on in all areas, so well balanced.  it's a shame this style of film has pretty much dried up in the modern day, they are there of course, but you have to look a lot harder. It was interesting to see Portman in her debut, and obviously the potential was there for everyone to see, but I must say Oldman really stole the show.

For sure, so simple yet so effective. Seeing it for the first time 17 year on makes it all the more enjoyable, it's so hard to replicate a film which pretty much was the pioneer for everything that followed in the crime/drama genre, but to me it seems those cinematographic fundamentals are immensely lacking these days.

Btw that was the first movie I have seen in weeks (due to personal stuff), taking a break made me realise just how much a love to escape for a few hours. I love film, no more words needed.

Now to try a few of those French titles Uzique mentioned, I have enjoyed every French film I have seen to date.

no, it's because once you've seen the film once, and have been entertained by it's prime and only conceit, it loses its appeal. the film is impressive on first watching only because of the plot and the central conceit-- and after that it's a hollow shell made up of gimmicks and prone to over-serious pretention. it has nothing to do with 'hating for the sake of hating'; it's all to do with 'not celebrating because there's nothing to celebrate'.
