how am i telling you how things work? you attacked my ability to read - i said im doing just fine 'reading' in my academic capacity, at university. then YOU took it upon yourself with all those 'years of real-life experience' to tell me that i was only going to "flip burgers" for the rest of my life, as if it's some retort to my confidence about being able to fucking read. lol. do you actually read the flow of the argument yourself? talk to me about skipping logic...

i want to go into criticism and music reviews. i have an arranged internship for the wire magazine (though they normally don't offer them), one of the world's foremost and influential music-culture magazines, the summer after my graduation. after that, funding depending, im likely going to take a master's in my specific area of interest at UCL, one of the world's top universities. at what point am i going to encounter 'bitterness' because my passion doesn't coincide with my degree? i said i didn't take my degree to get a job, i.e. i didn't take a vocational course... but that doesn't mean my passion for reading, writing and culture can't carry over to real-world prospects. huge leaping logical assumptions, again! and all those years of experience to better intuit and inform you! tch tch...

not sure how any of this probing is relevant, though, other than to refute FEOS's funny "can you read?" comment. my reply was just meant to confidently riposte the all-so-typical 'haw haw you're an english student, shouldn't this be easy?' that comes up in every thread... because yes, it is easy. i'm doing rather fine and well, actually!

who is paid to read? that's so reductive. i'll be paid and employed in a research field / profession that is directly applicable and influenced by my reading-interests, though. that's pretty much as close as anyone can get to being paid to read, or being employed around the subject(s) that they love. for non-vocational degrees it's hardly a case of having the same career-structure as vocational degrees... i think im very fortunate and very fulfilled to be doing what i'm (prospectively) doing. an arts graduate could find a lot less use for their degree.

You started us down this track by making a "review" of a book you hadn't read. You made the claim that you could do that based on ten pages from the beginning of the book and your treasure trove of knowledge on the written word--as an undergraduate student. Sorry. I don't care how "good" of a student you are. You're still just a student. You have no standing to throw the intellectual mud that you do here.

i'm not backing down. beck's style sucks dick. you think it's a good style. it is simple and rudimentary prose.

style doesn't change. the way an author writes doesn't morph magically as the book develops. it's his writing style. everyone has one. talented authors can imitate and parodize several. beck is not one of them. all of my IRL stuff has nothing at all to do with 'qualifying' that statement. it's just the way it is. i can read 200 pages of beck and i'll still have the same opinion of his style; how do 10 pages of his disjointed sentences not give a representation of the other 200 pages? you're being pretty dumb.

Uhh yeah. It doesn't require sitting in a lecture hall to learn calculus. Same goes for sciences if you have the money for lab materials. You've wasted an obscene amount of your fathers money when you could've just gone backpacking and bought yourself a library.

No, you're being obstinate. You haven't read the book, yet you're casting judgment. It is intellectually dishonest of you to do so, full stop. If I were to dismiss a book--or the entirety of the author's work--you post here based on reading the first ten pages, you would rant about the ridiculous nature of that, as well. And rightly so. How many of Beck's books have you read? I'm betting it's the big goose egg. Yet you are sitting there, dissecting his writing style, as if you've analyzed it in depth--from a ten-page perusal of one of his books.

Really. Step back and take an objective, intellectual look at what you're doing.

BTW, this is about the principle of what you're doing. I said in the OP that it wasn't that great of a book and that Beck's style wasn't that great (again with the reading comprehension).
