la haine (the hate) - 10/10.

for anyone that liked un prophete (or any of the other french films here that i have recommended, to a lesser degree)- YOU MUST WATCH THIS FILM. it brings all of the brilliantly poetic french realism to a new level, and takes a deep and introspective look at life outside of the confines of the prison drama. yet this film is also defined by the justice system in france: civil and social justice and injustice as much as the prison system itself. the prison setting of un prophete (and its religious imagery) casts a menacing spectre over the everyday lives of the central characters in la haine, and their struggles in the outer-city banlieues. set around the parisian riots of the 1990's, la haine is a widely-set study of society in the multicultural european 20th century, and the individual's struggle to define oneself within it and to transcend above it.

really if i had to choose a 'must view' top 5 films of all that i have waxed lyrical about on here... this would be one of them.

(starring vincent cassel as the main protagonist, who you will be familiar with as the manipulative ballet instructor from black swan).
Sure it's 10/10 but how did Kassovitz get from La Haine to Babylon AD?

Oh and Gothika...

None the less, La Haine is tres bien.

After hearing good things in this thread i've been watching the old BBC WWII documentary The World At War.

Yeah it's basically a 10/10 so far. Enormous amount of footage, lots of detail great narration, loads of of interviews with people that were involved. I'm learning a lot about the war.

I'm on episode 15 and I'm definitely going to watch the rest.
Definitely my favorite WWII series. If you're specifically interested in the Third Reich and how Hitler gained his power/influence I highly recommend  Nazis: A warning from history

127 Hours - 9.5/10

I knew Franco was a good actor, but he really proves himself here. Boyle's direction is, as usual, fantastic. I notice how he really didn't thank God after he escaped and never once blamed him for getting there. That line (when his delusion started) saying "everything I've done in my life has led me to this rock" was pretty strong. It seemed he viewed the entire ordeal as a test, not from God, but of himself.

Just a great movie. Though certainly not for the squeamish.

Paranormal Activity 2.

8/10

The odd sequel that's better than the original. Neatly wraps up the story from the first with a prequel that transitions to a sequel in the same style in a way that totally makes sense, bringing in the two main characters from the first movie. And it pseudo-explains the goings-on in the first movie, as well.

A prequel and a sequal? What a fucking awesome idea. What do you call that exactly? a se-pre-qual-hybrid?

Just watched both Paranormal Activity films.

First one was alright, bit jumpy every now and then, but the second one was really good. I liked the explanation for the story of the first, as well as all the weird shit going on. The end was especially good.

Worth a watch if you haven't already.

Not as good as the original, but still a solid sequel. Better than the second one by a long shot though.

Tangled got 90% avg critic (93% top) and 89% avg user approval on RT. It can't be all that bad. I feel bad for missing it now.

They always take the biggest audience for these movies in account, i.e 5-year-olds. If its entertaining, sort of educational (moral and all that) and not something a parent will fall asleep to watching its considered good for a children's movie
If they didn't do this, than they would all get 70%-ish scores max

Didn't say I disagree...just wanted you to know how broad the demographic for that film is.

And that you like the same movie as a 4 year old girl.

Just sayin'.

"It's the top songs, stunning 3D visuals including an amazing dam-bursting sequence, funny script and laugh-out-loud physical comedy that make this a hugely enjoyable experience for kids and adults alike."

You're right, but it doesn't mean they'd give it an average review without it. I'd take a high-quality animated production over yet another pretentious thriller with bland characters and an uninteresting plot any day.

"A romance with songs, and none of them thankfully sung by animals."
"For the first time in a while, it looks like Disney's cracked the formula without needing to rely on Pixar to figure out the equations."

Even without seeing it though, 10/10 sounds a bit exaggerated.

I've got to admit, the soundtrack is better than the average Disney film.

Thankfully, no electronic music.
