The problem isn't with their salaries it's their pension programs.

But whatever I just think unions and their members are unfairly bearing the full force of American economic angst.
unfair?  i was part of two mass layoffs in my life.  did i go cry and protest like the rhode island teachers?  no i went and got another job.  and, it is about salary also.  union workers on average make roughly 10k more per year than non union workers.  dont see us at the capital crying and moaning do ya?

I thought the title was referring to the mafia, not an angry mob of people. Then I kept reading, saw it was about unions, and realized my initial interpretation was right.

I know it's not comparable to a teachers union or something similar, but when I worked at a large chain grocery store (Stop and Shop for you US northeasterners), the union I was in was a fucking joke. Basically ensured that no matter how hard you worked, you could not get a raise. Raises only came with time spent there, and you got a small raise every 6 months. There were also multiple occasions where people had terrible, terrible work ethic or would do almost nothing, and could not get fired because the higher ups didn't feel it was worth it to go through the union.

Again, it was a part time job, but it was my first experience with unions...and it was awful.
I worked at a Whole Foods which a lot of ultra-leftists criticize because of their anti-union policies. Yet we had better pay and better benefits than people working at Giant and Safeway, both of which have unions.

Our transit agency, WMATA is at the mercy of the ATU. You would not believe some of the hood-ass behavior you see from employees of the agency, including station managers chimping out at customers. If you did that where I worked, you'd be fired in no time flat. In the ATU, you get a pat on the back and probably a raise.

tbh it isn't tons more expensive than giant, especially if you use coupons and buy the deals. IMO the best combo if you aren't loaded is to get things like cereal at Giant and things like produce and meat from WF.

e: not to toot my horn, but it's also consistently ranked one of the best companies to work for. I don't believe either Giant or Safeway show up there. hmmm, yeah WF is so horrible for being anti-union

Don't forget they took money from you weekly. They also kept your hours down to make sure you didn't become full time. Then they would have to give you benefits. I had buddies that worked at S&S after highschool.

Yep, that they did. Was an awful job. I work at a summer camp now that I used to go to as a kid, and even though my pay was shit last year (8-4 M-F, $1000 before taxes, tips from parents... probably made like $2000 after tips), it was 10x better not having to deal with that awfully run place. Pay gets bumped up $800 every year I go back too, so by my senior year of college I'll be making $4000 not including tips.

It will be better for all Wisconsin residents because it strikes a blow against union bullying of the taxpayers of this state.

Florida is right to work. .. and tbh the Teamsters still defended people who weren't in the union. Mostly because they just assumed every hourly employee was in the union.

Ammunition was found next to several entrances and do we hear this in the news?  Noooooo.  Why?  Oh because union types wouldn't be violent, not a chance.  Now if it was a Tea Party protest?  Headline news nationwide, the conservatives are trying to take over the building by force.

Right well I haven't been keeping up to date with my US sources of late and for obvious reasons the local media here has been entirely dominated by local issues or the ME, so what exactly is this whole thing about?

And that tells me everything I need to know about how and why this started, who is involved and the context behind everyone's motives. Cheers.

Not quite.  Court order was served that the protesters could not spend the night in the building. The cops were stopping the senator from entering the building, thought he was a protester, slammed him to the ground and were cuffing him when he I.D.ed himself.
Real good union folk doing their job.
And yes he was allowed in to his office to get what he had gone there for and escorted out.
