The whole point of facebook has kind of vanished though... instead of being you, you're (or at least I am) forced to censor yourself so as not to offend your friends parents, neighbors, siblings, their gay uncle etc. Or, god forbid, their boss. My fiancee has forced me to delete stuff from my wall that she thought was embarrassing or didn't want people to know about. Took all of the fun out of it.

Or as Facebook VP Elliot Schrage bluntly (if less colorfully) put things in the midst of a similar uproar last year: If you don't want Facebook to share your personal information, don't share your personal information with Facebook

TBH I don't even know how ad revenue could create that sorta money. I'd understand maybe a hundred million. But 82.9 BILLION!? That seems and aweful lot for essentially ad space, even though there are 500million members atm. I couldn't justify investing in it I don't think.
There's micro transaction games too, not just ad revenues.

The problem is that it almost always auto opt-in. They made a similar remark in an interview when someone asked why is opt-in to the new features. They said you opt in when you join.

I guarantee you most of it is ad revenue. You need look no further that google to see the potential for incredible ad revenue.

There is that, and the shifting EULA.  When I joined FB, it was limited to just universities (and even then, there was a separate facebook for each one)...and there weren't as many ways to distribute my data to other people.  Since then, they've shifted a great deal more towards a publically accessible system...and the information that I entered all that time ago gets automatically opted in and shared (which was not even close to a threat back when I joined).  Luckily I didn't put in much info...and I barely use it as it is.

A few headlines regarding the value of some social media companies. Does anyone else think there might be a social media value bubble right now? I think the tech behind them is interesting but I don't think any of them have the money producing potential to justify those numbers.

What do you think? Would you invest in any of them if an IPO came around? I wouldn't.
I guess I am old but I fail to see how any of these social networks have caught on. What is with this generation that thinks anyone gives a flying fuck, or should give a fuck about their every thought or every move regardless as to how stupid, or insignificant it might be?

No, they don't give a fuck about the average joe. But Twitter, for example, is a good outlet for things that are intersting to people. Yes there are tools on twitter that sit back and tweet every bowel movement. But you don't have to follow those people. The good thing about twitter is that it is what you make of it.

25 years ago, people would keep a diary, and no one would read it
today they keep a twitter, and still no one reads it
problem?

I find no one so interesting that I must follow their every thought on life as they live it, in a single sentence. Now facebook I can understand, but even then there are dip shits out there that log their every decision, every thought, every move. It is attention whoring at its most disgusting.

and my God, when did the church of facebook first open its doors? Where the fuck do all of these Jesus freaks come from, seeking prayers for their real estate deals, or a job that pays more?

the diary industry wasn't? come on... it's just the same shit, different era and different medium. nothing has changed. you act as if this web2.0 technology has ushered in a new era of self-obsession and narcissism... well, no. it's the exact same social phenomenon. everyone had a diary 25 years ago and there was a social peer pressure and self-generated sense of 'necessity' to have one, also. nowadays everyone has a twitter so everyone else flocks to it. it's not so much a "i want everyone to see the minute details of my boring little life" so much as a "everyone else is using it so it is the 'thing' to 'do'". and, as i already said... it makes no difference. still nobody reads it and still nobody is bothered by it. the tweets of a 14 year old german girl about her daily routine are no more in-your-face than the heart-locked diary of a 15 year old american high-school cheerleader. people just like to piss and moan about whatever is popular, i guess.

A diary is not the same thing. A diary is private thoughts for only you to read. This is not private and it is certainly not anonymous. This is ego, it is a need for attention. and yes it is self obsession and narcissism.

I use this forum in the way you describe, I post my opinions and thoughts on issues and I read the responses, a diary that talks back to me. However, I am still private and unknown.

I found out what went wrong with nasa's launch yesterday before sky news did. It's interesting to see what other people are saying about different topics. We've been sharing opinions online for a long time now. Twitter is just a syndicate that makes it real easy to do.

I follow mostly official organizations like Nasa Ames, JPL, etc.. I care about opinions because sometimes I find them interesting and insightful. It broadens the intellectual horizon don't ya know .

well not really talking about those though, I am addressing individual tweeters and their narcissistic belief that everyone should give a shit what they think in every random thought that pops in their heads, and those that follow them.
