i love the concepts and the hardcore elements... i also love the sense of a cohesive community, on the micro and macro level.

but the gameplay and actual intuitive experience seems so bland and uninspiring

the splodies are pretty but the mechanics of causing them are pretty much braindead

I guess you have to not think of it as a guy flying around in a space ship ripping shit up a la fighter jet and think more along the lines of navy admiral commanding his crew of mercenaries to make splodies. You are in command of the ship, you aren't doing the flying or the shooting. Any better? Once you find yourself in a big fleet fulfilling you're role its a different experience.

I play for extremely shallow reasons. My alliance mates are mostly cool. My ships and lasers are cool, and I make people really sad. Pretty much it.

The complexity of the game combined with the large fleet warfare is what held my interest for the last 2 years. The problem is, imo, the enjoyment you get from this game is proportional to the amount of time you invest playing it. Log in for only a couple hours a day and you will most likely miss out on all the actual fun shit that goes on with a 0.0 alliance(sometimes forming fleets can take fucking 2 hours, lol). And quite often you can be on a roam in hostile space that will last over 3 hours, and if you log out before the group returns you'll have to waste time scouting yourself back when you do come back or just do a suicide run - which never ends well.

To each his own. I personally hate large fleet fights. Small gangs of say 15 or less is what wins it for me. Had a fight last night of a 5v5 and it was probably some of the most epic fighting I've seen in a while. I guess it's just the rush of losing your ships, putting it all out there on the line to win, etc. Not to mention all the things that can win you the fight before you even enter one, ie ship fittings.

i like both. small stuff like 5v5 means you have to rely on individual pilot skills a lot lot more and when you win it's a real :smug:. but the huge huge fights (h-w etc) make you feel like a part of something much bigger.

and what is with EVE charging like £6 more than any other sub-MMO per month

are they really that arrogant? that's a lot of cash for a game where you do most of your progression offline, not even playing
