I'm glad it was a success

4:42 is the debris, that's from the external tank alright, it hits the shuttle just outside of the camera view I think. Hope no damage is done.

Why do you say it's from the external tank? The tank doesn't appear to have any black tiles on it.

look at the video 11b posted on the bottom of the last page, the shuttle is the top, camera view from the external tank. can recognize by the tailwings and that the engines ignite on the upper body after seperation.

If you look closely, the debris rips off the orange part of the external tank.

can't see where it hits, goes too fast, but can't see any visible damage done on seperation either, maybe it hit somewhere else or didn't do much. (or perhaps you simply can't see.. lighting is a bit bad)

just now on the live stream they said these were multipile cases of foam falling off, noticeably at the 4 minute moment, said it's of no concern as it fell off outside of the 'danger moments'.

i.e. completely succesful launch

Pfew, good thing it didn't blow up... That would have been a bad way to end the Shuttles reign...

*knock on wood* - for re-entry

Now for (was it 10 years?) of NASA sucking Bransons dick

It is. However, two other orbiters, Endeavor and Atlantis still have launches left.

Looks like the Astronauts have to hitch rides with the Cosmonauts until the private corp.s are ready with alternatives after the Shuttle

.. and if NASA is hitching a ride while they develop the next generation of vehicles it won't be with Branson. It will be with the Russians.

The Buran burnt down with the old Soviet union. NASA and the ESA has hitched rides on the souyz spacecraft before though.

Yeh but the Souyz didn't look nearly as awesome as a Buran on the back of an Antonov

The angle it makes when taking off always looks weird to me tbh, at the last bit it's as though it's going almost completely horizontal
That is because it flies east, utilizing the Earths gravity to give it a boost.

Nah, docking would be a big issue with the space planes they are developing. I suspect SpaceX will be the first private co to develop something that can reach above low earth orbit, or can dock with th ISS.

On Approach
After a very cloudy day at Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England, the skies cleared to allow a view of this stunning pass of the ISS and Discovery on Feb. 26, 2011. Photographer Rob Cullen, who captured this breath-taking view of the shuttle Discovery and the space station, said, "I could not believe the timing was so fortuitous to show the shuttle closing in on the station. I captured this, what I guess could potentially be, a once in a lifetime image of these two spaceships traveling as separate craft using Canon EOS 40D using eyepiece projection through a hand guided 8.5 inch Newton."

Okei guys. Picture time! Video time later.

Cleaned the lense before the launch but apparently someone over in front or on the side had to add spit in their breath so all the pix have got some dots here and there

Drove straight to Space View Park about 4h before the launch. Was lucky and got the car parked just about 400m from the pier on a small mall parking lot on Broad street.
