oh, my bad.

so to answer your question - we have light beer because weekend warriors buy it. so much of it in fact, that Amstel created a version of their own beer and imported it . . .

i hate getting lumped in with the generic term 'Americans' when i in fact prefer darker ales, yet i feel a need to stick up for my couch potato brethren.

i see, Amstel light only has ~3.5% alcohol. normal Amstel that is sold here has 5%.  so amstel light is something like the special festival-beer with low alcohol we have here at festivals to keep ppl a bit sober

I believe most beers in the US fall between 4-5% (ice beers typically between 5-6%). Of course some are less, some are more.

Last I heard Bud Light is the biggest seller in the US, followed by Budweiser.

The only way to get beer in those kinds of amounts in the States is in cardboard boxes. You can find plastic cases like those in the States in liquor stores, but not for every beer like is often the case in Europe.

I had a hemp beer at one of the breweries in Vienna - so damn good.

Everyone knows the US is the domain of the light beer. How else do they brag about chugging down six packs, also the cans are regular cans like coke cans

We have plenty of dark beers too.  Yes, the light beers are the best sellers (and the most advertised) but we've got plenty of darker beers too.  I prefer Pale Ales myself.

Who can't "chug a six pack" of normal beer?

And Ken, "light beer" has nothing to do with the colour.

Yea, try chugging a six pack of German/Austrian beer - bloody thing is 3L of beer compared to the 1.8 that is an American. Weaksauce.

mek, we all know what you like to chug.

The breweries here can make a variety of alcohol %'s, they just have to be 3.2 to sell wholesale. the anniversary barley wine is 10.4% and only available in the liquor store.

https://img214.imageshack.us/img214/8408/uinta16thanniversary124.jpg

we also have counties within the state that are "dry" (no alcohol sales) and conditionally "dry" (they can only sell during certain hours/days).

so if it is 3.2 you can sell it at wallmart etc?  ok here it has to be below 15% for the supermarket and you only have to be 16. everything above is seen as strong liquor and you have to be 18 to buy it in the liqour store.

yes, for this state (maybe others too). 21 is the drinking age because the federal government twisted the states arms (denying them money for highways) to set it there.

all liquor laws are made at the state level, unless a county or city passes a tougher law (it can't be looser).

i really believe the way Americans view alcohol leads to binge drinking in people younger than 21, because it's already illegal for them to possess, why not get drunk if you're going to get in trouble anyways?

Love this stuff, used to live near the brewery when I lived in Tasmania.

https://www.homeliquordelivery.com.au/images/9930.jpg

Also, from my birthplace of Fremantle, they have a great little brewery called Little Creatures. You can do a taste test of 5 beers and a cider they brew, and at the end have a pot of the one of your choice. Costs $5, bargain. You also learn the history of those beers too from the knowledgeable bartender.

I particularly like the Bright Ale:

Boag's is really good stuff, really crisp and refreshing. I always get it when I'm at Australian pubs.

Yeah I love Boags. Not enough pubs here in QLD have it on tap, but when I do find one it's a beautiful thing
