Well he didn't have much money to get it fixed, we never realised it was such an easy fix.

i just taught him how to change gear without the clutch
How to ruin his gearbox you mean?

and why buy a car if you can't afford to maintain it?
changing gear without the clutch doesn't ruin your gearbox you moron
Oh please do explain... You'll slam it into gear? Grind the cogs once in a while huh?

You can take the tranny out of gear at any time without using the clutch. Not difficult or damaging at all.

The trick is sliding to the next gear as the revs fall, at exactly the proper time (basically when the input and output shafts are in sync, as Rec says below). For my Jetta, it's around 2.2-2.3k depending on the gear.

Basically, you take it out of first at 3.4, let the revs fall and slide it into second at 2.3. You rev it a bit if you miss the spot (if you don't, that's where the grinding comes in). Of course, it's all dependent on the speed you're at. It actually takes quite a bit of skill, but is very useful. I had to learn to do it quickly when I was injured last year at work and lost the use of my left leg.

@ camm: do you know what part is broken? Is it just the lever or is it the linkage?

I had a buddy in high school that drove an '84 celica for 3 years without a clutch.  if the input and output shafts are spinning at the same speed the shift hub will engage.  synchronizers don't like it very much, but if you're gently they'll still last a while.

so how much did you put aside for your first car if it goes wrong after paying expensive insurance and the stupid taxes you have?
