I like Friedensreich Hunderwasser's somehow organic architectural designs:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bu … dertwasser

It's very nice if you find one amongst a completely different style of architecture, but you definitely can't build more than one of these in the same street or even city district.

Also, the Latin dictionary I had in secondary school was designed by him.

On another note, season 4 of Grand Designs is now being shown on TV here. Love that show.
I built one of these.. amazing stuff..until I realised 2 small pieces were missing.

Hey, anyone read Touching the Void? My favorite book, I think. I just read the same few things over and over. Into Thin Air, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, too.

I never read touching the void. I did read a book about global warming once. I am glad to say "I have seen the evidence!".

From what I am told, Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a better movie than book. The same with Fight Club. One of my favorite movies but lousy book. It's a miracle that anyone decided to make a movie out of it. Everything was better on film except the lack of homosexual undertones. I wonder if the FC film would have won so much support from right wings types if the narrator met Tyler at a nude beach when he was making sand art like in the book.

Palahnuik (i don't care to spell it correctly if im wrong) has a very acidic, biting writing style.  I understand what he's trying to put across, i just don't like it much.  I have a friend who writes and he went through a phase where he copied his tone and prose.  It was fucking terrible.

I think Chuck Pal's purposely offensive and outrageous writing style hasn't aged with the times. Looking back at a lot of his stuff, it seems pretty tame compared to the stuff you would come across on 4chan or other internet places. So it is more boring than shocking. I feel the same way regarding shock radio host like Howard Stern. I understand he was cutting edge 20ish years ago but he seems so creepy, old, politically correct, and boring now.

OFTCN is a better book than movie, IMO. Granted it's been a while since I've seen/read either.

Wtf does that have to do with architecture

Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami.

It's a Japanese Lesbian Detective Story. You won't find many of those.

it's just an old fuddy professor taking a walk around a pretty boring and ancient part of the english countryside, but basically he constantly goes on these huge digressions and starts talking about other things and it all links together in this incredible mind-map of a pretty, well, incredible mind. and everything in sebald is in some way about the holocaust, about the experience of being the son (and hence survivor) of the holocaust, personally and as a german national, and how that huge traumatic event cannot be discussed or figured or represented in any way by art/literature. pretty fucking enchanting read. plus it's short. and it's pretty easy to read, stylistically. you just need a little patience to follow this old guy as he starts talking about the european silk-worm trade in the 17th century or whatever. but every page bristles with a very human (and humane) intelligence.

right good shit, mate.

Which book can you recommend to someone wanting to be turned off literature?

I always turn to Dickens, but its getting boring, I need something new.

you say Dickens like I'm supposed to defend him. there aren't many people in academic circles who will really praise Dickens as a writer. he is often sentimental and over-done.

also why don't you try something new instead of repeatedly carping on one of the most obvious examples of victorian literature? you almost bang on about hating Dickens as if he proves that 2,600 years of western lit are a giant sham. why not try and give 150 pages of someone else a go and stop being such a sad pathetic little man? you might actually learn – or feel – something new.

dilbert: "i disliked one author in school and I'm proud to say I've never tried reading anything since".

Back in 2002, my school took us on a winter field trip to see a Christmas Carol at a Broadway theater. It was nice. At the end of the play when Ebenezer Scrooge became nice, they sent a guy to give out candy to all of the little kids on the field trip. Everyone in my row of seats got a piece of candy except me. Guy looked right at me and kept going. Bastard.
