Army of Darkness was the first of the series I'd seen, and on VHS. It had some good stuff like 'good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun,' my favorite version of the castle battle and, I think, the best ending. All this I'd decided after my VHS copy was accidentally given away (later purchased online) and I picked up the director's cut on DVD. The commentary is interesting. I think the filmmakers tried to over-analyze the film and dissect Ash too much. I'm not sure if they're just bitter, but it kind of sucked the fun out of it hearing them criticize their own work and lament scenes that I loved. The new cut itself seems to have slightly less character.
