I'm reading David Morrell's "First Blood" at the moment.

If this guy wasn't American/foreign I'm pretty sure whoever did this would have walked away easily, in a country like that. Police probably wouldn't have even investigated it.

It's interesting though how the US is saying he has immunity and Pakistan saying he doesn't.

I wonder how shit would go down if it was a guy from there shooting up in the US. Everyone would call him a terrorist. So really it's no different if they see an American shooting up shit over there, and everyone calls him stupid Rambo barbarian.

do you have any idea how many foreign people we have here?  fuck sakes if some slaves tried to carjack him and he shot them, we would not call him a terrorist.  stop being stupid.

Morell did a good job describing Teasle's and Rambo's thoughts and memories, which throws a completely different light on them compared to the movie.

IMO, in the movie, Teasle gets across as a donut-eating, hippie-bashing cop and Rambo as the poor, PTSD war veteran getting harrased, while in the book, Teasle's actions are actually more reasonable. Rambo on the other hand kills a cop while getting a POW flashback when they try to cut his hair in the prison's shower.
Later he kills all of Teasle's search posse and takes down a helicopter, while in the movie he doesn't actively kill anyone (except for the dogs).

I think I'm gonna try finding the novelizations of the movies Rambo: First Blood Part 2 and Rambo III that Morrell has written to supply the characterization that was omitted in the film sequels.

Well, there are varying degrees of diplomatic protection. I don't think that regular consular staff are normally afforded protection from arrest or detainment, and the statements in the article suggest that the Pakistani government considers him a consular officer.
Right, but the US disagrees, which is interesting that he was there but there was no agreed upon status?  I don't know.  You'd think the host nation would have to confirm or deny such protections or at least have some standing arrangement and not go back on it.

Edit: American Rambo Goes Berserk?  ...Really?
"American Rambo" was the headline in a Pakistani paper.

Diplomatic rules don't necessarily protect all people from all crimes. Serious crimes aren't necessarily covered, and they have to be a registered diplomat going about their normal business. A consular employee is not necessarily covered at all.
If he's not a diplomat, was not driving around on official business, didn't have a license for his firearm, didn't have a security detail and hadn't informed the Pakistanis of his movements then its hard to see how he could be covered.

In all cases even if the guy had full immunity the embassy weighs the pros and cons and may decide to waive immunity - if for example one renegade going to prison is less of a problem than having diplomatic relations affected.

Should be fun to watch.
As far as I know, if they are covered by immunity, then they are covered from all crimes--however, the diplomat's home nation can waive the coverage if the crime was unconnected to their duties or serious enough, etc... I could be wrong, but that's what I had thought.  Regardless of that, the host country can expel them.  You are right that not all employees are covered, HOWEVER, from the article, the US seemed to think he was covered, which makes it somewhat of a problem.

It is possible that the US and Pakistan have a different arrangement.  Who knows!

Edit: ehhh, I'm not a lawyer and am therefore misguided here, lol

A US man held in Pakistan over the shootings of two men in Lahore was secretly working for the CIA at the time, reports quoting unnamed US officials state.

Raymond Allen Davis, 36, was working as a CIA contractor for the US consulate in Lahore, the officials say.

Mr Davis is being held in jail pending a decision on his diplomatic status.

The former soldier shot two men he says were trying to rob him. The incident has soured US-Pakistan relations.

Correspondents say the Pakistan government is under tremendous domestic pressure to put Mr Davis on trial despite US assertions that he has diplomatic immunity. Mr Davis is charged with two counts - murder and possession of illegal weapons.
Oops, pretty sure that invalidates any diplomatic immunity.

Honestly, do you just wanna see him killed? Does that get your rocks off?

Actually related to the topic...I doubt it changes anything. It should of been pretty obvious that he was a contractor... Ex Special Forces? Carrying a weapon? The fact that the pakis are so intent on keeping him while the US is so intent on getting him back? And finally, the clincher... Magically another car appears with another "consular official" who accidentally runs someone over. Its not like the guy was a diplomat out to buy a bushel of bananas.

So what is this guy really? Probably what it is said he is, a contractor. He works for Xe and is probably pulling security. Possibly, and a very slight one at that, he was being paid to do surveillance or follow someone.

What it changes is that he's clearly not a diplomat and therefore clearly has no immunity.

Maybe the Pakistanis will cut a deal, depends how much the CIA wants to pay the relatives.

He shot two guys who were going to "rob" him (I believe it was probably a hit but it doesn't matter). At the end of the day the problem is that a white man killed a 2 brown men and this is Pakistan, where its still ok to be racist. If this was some paki who did the shooting, no one would give a shit and he'd be let go, but hes white, and American, so he gets fucked.

Well I don't know, the CIA expects to be able to play judge, jury and executioner, wiping out any brown people they like - its not as if the FBI are allowed to do that with Americans.

When one of theirs gets the full force of Pakistani law because he's white thats bad luck.
