What the hell hunter, I've read all past 7 posts of you in this thread and I have NO idea of what you're trying to say. Anyway I'll respond to what I do understand;

Well I'm not exactly burning them at the stake, just flinging as much information as humanly possible in the general direction of our resident evolution deniers. I cannot for the life of me understand someone who does not acknowledge the merits of the theory scratch that, confident enough to call it a fact, it just has to be so that they haven't been properly acquainted with evolution or something.

Either way if they keep denying in the face of overwhelming evidence that's simply an insult to their own reason and integrity, if they had any.

Guys please don't make this topic get closed before Shifty posts his response.

I am generally interested in what he has to say and would like to make him a little more agnostic if I may. I realise atheism is likely out of reach, but some skepticism would do the boy good.

You're asking for a miracle here man.

why do atheists feel they can try to argue religion when they obviously don't understand it in the first place?

That logic could be applied to the various Christians/Mooslims/Jews/Hindus and other religions that don't understand science.

everyone finds their faith in different ways.  just because you went to a catholic school doesn't mean you found your faith.  sure, you know the stories, you know the morals, you know the rules, and you even know the traditions.  but do you understand why i'm faithful?  no, because you'll pull the "you believe in some man sitting above the earth controlling everything" argument, which obviously means you don't understand.

if you did understand, we wouldn't be having this argument, because you would know the reason i am faithful.

whatever you say, but if you do understand it, it means you understand why you can't argue with someone who do has their faith, because it's pointless and you'll never win.

That's really dumb. That's like saying you should never debate anything because people have their mind set on a specific belief. And thus this section and debating as a whole would be non-existant.

No, he's ridiculous.  Are you earnestly saying that faith is something that only the 'initiated' can understand?  If you limit your debate to those who already agree with you, that isn't much of a debate, is it?

I'm not belittling anyone's faith.  I'm an agnostic, but as a scientist, I get riled up when people try to overshadow scientific principles with hardcore religious doctrine that is obviously false.  I do not need to be faithful to those premises in order to argue against them.

While that is a good argument to pretty much end any discussion questioning faith alone, it doesn't account for the organized religion he's part of, complete with holy book, traditions and doctrine.

My problem isn't specifically with people believing in a god - theists - but the entire story people have built around the concept. the various versions of the Bible, the Quran... anything - there's plenty of arguments to question those.

It'll end a discussion, but not in any real meaningful way.

you can't debate it, because that's what faith is.  if you could give proven, factual reasons as to why someone should be faithful, it wouldn't be faith anymore.  however, someone can still give proven, factual reasons for why you shouldn't be faithful.  the non-believer will always win.

a debate on religion is basically impossible.

the Bible is not a work of science, it is a book of love to his people, which demonstrates morals and some other stuff.  what is there to question?

obviously, in a world where everyone isn't truly religious.  all these wars 'caused' by religion, weren't caused by religion, because if the groups of people in those wars actually followed their own religion, they would realize that what they are doing is against their own religion.

The Bible contains much more than simply a story of a god and love for his people, almost everything written in there can be questioned.
